Plumbing / circulator pumps
« on: August 06, 2018, 09:26:09 AM »
any recommendations for circulator pumps for new install?
1. main circulator pump from wood boiler to 100 flat plate heat exchanger 160 ft from boiler to house 1 1/4 inch thermopex.
2. 4 circulator pumps for house, 1st for dhw for indirect storage tank, 2nd for main level baseboard hot water, 3rd basement in floor radiant, 4th garage in floor radiant.
3. second loop circulator from wood boiler to pole barn water to air heat exchanger.

what pumps and where does everyone buy them?

Thank you

another question that I have is my viessmann boiler has two supplies and two returns, one side is high temp/dhw the other is low temp in floor radiant two zones. do I need a separate heat exchanger for that side? if so what size would you recommend?

yes the lines in and out of the 50 plate are from wood boiler. I made a mistake in the drawing as far as the tee with 4 branches. the pump above the plate exchanger wrap pump is a wraparound pump the keeps boiler hot 24/7, it appear not to be needed in your drawing which is simplified and would be easier to work with. so just to clarify I do not need a wraparound pump? in your drawing what is XT  in the supply line right out of boiler?

I have attached a drawing of my current setup in the house. currently I have a 50 plate 5x12 and my 53 gallon tank runs out of hot water and takes a while to replenish, I thought if I added a second heat exchanger to cold water coming into tank it would pre-heat water. I always hear how people never run out of hot water. I am in the process of installing a new wood boiler and 1 1/4 inch thermopex. could it be the old wood boiler was just not getting enough hot water to house?

Plumbing / Flat Plate Exchanger Install For DHW and Heat
« on: July 20, 2018, 10:38:10 AM »
Hello group, I am in the process of installing a new wood boiler and want to make sure I hook up the system correct. my current system is a viessmann with and indirect storage tank. I would like to hook a 20 plate flat plate in the incoming cold Domestic water line to heat the tank and then install a 100 plate flat plate with wraparound pump for heating gas fired boiler. family size is 5, house is 4000 sq ft (2000 sq ft in floor radiant basement, 2000 sq ft main level with baseboard) 500 sq ft attached garage with radiant in floor. Does this flat plate hook ups sound correct? I have attached schematic of my gas fired boiler system. thank you for the insight

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Purchasing New Wood Boiler
« on: May 04, 2018, 09:18:05 AM »
Hello everyone I am ready to update my old Johnson wood boiler with something more efficient, I want to burn less wood. My current boiler is 17 years old and is coming to the end of its life cycle. I am sold on gasser models. I have been looking at central boiler, heatmaster, and polar. Polar dealer is closet to me if that matters. my house is modern built in 2000 has 6 inch walls. house is 4200 sq ft (2100 main floor with baseboard hot water, 2100 finished basement with radiant in floor) 576 sq ft attached garage with radiant in floor, and 1200 sq ft detached garage with radiant in floor which has never been hooked up. I have a forced air blower that I use in that garage instead. any suggestions on the brands I mentioned or others I didn't mention that are worth a look? I am going to put in new pex from the boiler to both buildings I want the good stuff like thermopex or logstor, any recommendations? I am running approx. 150 ft from stove to house and 15 ft from stove to second garage.

Thank you for all suggestions!

Plumbing / Taco 007 Pump becomes air locked
« on: March 03, 2015, 01:59:13 PM »
Hello everyone. I have had continuous problems with a Taco 007-F5 pump getting air locked. It has probably happened at least 5 times this winter. It is happening on my closed loop insider boiler. My house has 4 zones. (1) A main level baseboard hot water heat, (2) domestic hot water heat, (3) garage in floor, and (4) basement in floor. The zone I always have the problem with is the domestic hot water zone. When my DHW hot water storage tank is in need of hot water the pump kicks on and becomes priority over all other zones. It seems I never have a problem with my other pumps air locking just the DHW pump. Any thoughts on what could cause this?

Yes it does have its own pump it's a grundfos 15-58 3 speed set on speed number 3. I turned the mixing valve down and that seemed to help with draw on my hot water supply.

The workshop heater is about the same height as the outdoor boiler. Would there be a better choice for a pump? Perhaps another grundfos? Does the pump need to circulate non-stop or with the close proximity and heat in the water would that be enough to keep from freezing?

Plumbing / In floor heat zoning and proper boiler hook up questions
« on: November 19, 2014, 10:47:13 AM »
On my cold start gas boiler i have two supply and two return ports. On left side I have my 50 plate heat exchanger hooked up coming from my wood boiler. Also on the left I have two zones one for domestic hot water and one for baseboard hot water heat. On the right side of my gas boiler it is hooked up to basement and garage in floor heat with two zone circs one for the basement and one for the garage. Would it better to tap into return of the wood boiler water and plumb in another plate exchanger or will the 50 plate on the other side of the gas boiler take care of everything more effectively?  I have attached a diagram to show how the in floor heating is hooked up currently, does it look correct? One pump is a grundfos 15-58 3 speed circ and is set on high speed it has ifc check valves in the pump the other pump is a taco 007-f5 and has no check valves in the pump or installed in the zone line.

Ok i will give that a try. I have attached a drawing on how it will  flow with the pump reversed. Does the drawing look correct and how it should operate? It doesn't seem like the return flow from the dhw and baseboard zone will be re-heated by the flat plate heat exchanger because it will just flow into the return of gas boiler. I dont know how else you could make it work though. Maybe this way will work just fine.

Or are you suggesting I reverse only the wrap around circ pump and leave the other two alone?
