I'm intending to add heat to my detached garage.  The closest corner of the garage to the closest corner of my house is 65' away.  Right now the garage is uninsulated block 2 car garage with future plans to insulate.  I can't find any local dealers for underground piping other than Thermopex.  The local guy has it for $11.45/ft for the standard stuff.  I only plan on running a unit heater in the garage to keep it somewhat warm when I'm in there, so I think Thermopex would supply enough BTU's for it.  How's that sound?


I'm going to do some changes to my setup anyways.  Right now I have 30' of Logstor going from the boiler to the house, then another 30' or so of 1" PEX making a loop to the furnace and sidearm heat exchanger and then back to the boiler.  All of that is on a Grundfos 26-99 on low (where a Taco 007 was previously in place and could supply enough heat).  I have some 1-1/4" bodied manifolds from my old setup that I want to use.  Do a 30' loop to the house, through the manifolds, and back to the boiler using the 26-99 and then use the properly sized circulator for each zone off of that.  One loop for the furnace, one for water heater, one for the garage, and another loop for an unheated room in the house that I'm finishing out soon.

So 60 ft of Logstor and 30ft of 1" on the primary? Then you wish to add another 130ft of 1" to the detached garage as a secondary loop for a unit heater? How big will this unit heater be? If I understand your setup correctly and it were me, I'd leave the primary as it is instead of complicating it with 2 extra circs but turn the 26-99 up to maintain decent delta T with a full heat call. Then throw a pair of tees in that primary loop with a dedicated circ for the detached garage loop. All this will be dependent on heat load and flow rate though, and nobody can give an educated answer without them.

I don't like my current primary loop as it is.  It was a quick install to make it work before it got cold one winter 4 years ago or so.  I do intend on using the manifolds I have as I liked having control over each loop individually.  The sidearm is getting swapped out for a flat plate now that I've filtered and softened the domestic water in my house. 

The coil in my ductwork is a 20x20 from FreeHeat4U.com.  My boiler runs at 180-160 differentials and with a full heat load being drawn in the house, return temps are usually only 5 degrees drop from supply temps.  The unit heater I'm planning for the garage will probably be a "100k" unit heater that will only run while I'm out there or to maintain about 45 degrees in there at least.  I might just get another 20x20 coil and bolt a box fan to it wired to a 120v thermostat instead, but that's to be determined later.  The currently unheated room I'm going to finish will likely get radiant floors in it, so it'll need a separate loop for a mixing valve anyways.  It's a 12x24 room on the end of the house I'll need to finish enclosing and insulating.

I prefer to keep the DHW in series with the main loop. If you have it on a manifold, you are wasting power running a pump 24/7 when you are only using water from it probably less than an hour per day.
It also wastes a large percentage of the capacity available in the main loop.

5 degree delta with a 20x20? May want to double check that, with the 26-99 on speed 1 with your piping arrangement that's only about 15,000 BTU, and a 20x20 in a standard furnace will push out easily double that with your 6-7 GPM flow rate. Plus, a plate will suck the life out of the boiler water in a hurry. With 2 showers running simultaneously can get over 150,000 BTU which, at 7 GPM will pull the boiler water down 40-45 degrees alone. With the 26-99 on high and the primary piped as I previously described, you would be closer to 8 or 9 GPM with your short run of pipe which would pull that delta down considerably. As RSI pointed out, there is no sense running the plate on a secondary loop as you'd need to run the circ 24/7 anyway or add a flow switch to activate the pump on any DHW call. Unless you have heat creep issues, there's no benefit to running the 20x20 on a secondary either. Pressure drop on either is hardly enough to notice on the pump/flow rate, so that is of almost no concern. You can still use the manifold if you really want to and just valve off the other ports for future additions

I'm on board with putting the flat plate and 20x20 coil on the same circuit.  The water heater and furnace are in the same room in the basement, so that's no issue.  One big reason I was thinking of doing the coil on it's own circuit was for spring and fall days that get really hot during the day and then cold again a day or two later.  While I'm still running the boiler, if water is flowing through the coil, I can't run my air conditioner without heating the house via the coil.  Almost every spring and fall, there are a few days that I want to do that.  The house heats up enough from the sun that it can be over 80 inside pretty quickly. 



Flat plate: should I install that on the incoming water to the water heater?  I keep the electricity on to it all the time. 


Manifold: I had the unused ports valved off at the old house.  It worked out pretty well there.

There may be some benefit in starting and stopping flow through the coil in the duct if it's convecting heat, every duct is different and some do it worse than others, plus you could auto change to AC.
Agree with putting the DHW flat plate in the main loop. I'd put it first in line to avoid fluctuating water temps in the shower.

When I redid my system I put the HX on a secondary loop with its own pump, drastically cuts down on temperature creep on warmer sunny days. I have a three minute on-delay timer for the fan so the coil and ductwork has a little bit of time to warm up.

A secondary loop or fan coil valve will be required if you ever install a whole house humidifier that controls the fan on a call for humidity.

A 3 way zone valve works well for that, if you want to be able to run the AC, but a circ is fine too. Once you buy the pump, flanges, relay, extra piping, etc to make that work I feel a 24v zone valve that can wire directly to the furnace is a more cost effective option that also pulls less power. To each their own

We used to use the wax motor Taco 3 way zone valves(560 series) had enough get toasted with power surges or leak through the seals that we switched to pumping secondary loops. I'd guess slightly cheaper than the Taco zone valves and seemed to be more reliable. ?
I'm curious what brand of zone valve you guys use, maybe there are better ones. A zone valve definitely involves less labor.
Others can explain better but a 3 way zone valve is used along with another tee to force flow to bypass a coil until the thermostat calls for heat, then the valve opens and sends the flow around the long way through the heat exchanger.

As much as I don't like Taco otherwise, their Sentry zone valves are the bomb diggity. Both 2 and 3 way, they employ an actual ball valve with a 24v actuator. Very simple 2 wire operation, high CV rating, very well designed. I use them exclusively and probably have 70-80 in the field without a single issue so far. The 562 was notorious for trouble as well as the Honeywell, I've seen numerous failures in both

So I could run one loop to the coil and water heater flat plate, but use a 3-way zone valve to turn the coil off when there is no call for heat while the flat plate still gets boiler water?

Does the house ever get too warm with the current setup? Most people like the convection heat that the coil puts out since it cuts way back on the blower run time. This can vary a lot by house layout and some houses doesn't work well.

If manual bypass is ok, I would run the water to the plate heat exchanger, keeping line full 1"id. Then run full 1" Id pipe to the supply manifold. Then full 1" from the return manifold to the logstor.
Then run one loop to the furnace hx with 1" pex and one to the garage from the manifolds. Then do a 3rd that just goes between the manifolds for a bypass.

Running the 26-99 pump on high speed should be able to run everything.

If you don't want continuous flow to everything then this would not be the way to go.

Yes, essentially the 3 way valve would cut off flow to the coil between heat calls but you'd still have full flow through the flat plate and manifolds as the pump on the boiler runs 24/7

Where the Logstor comes through the foundation is where I'm going to put the manifolds.  It's an unfinished area of the basement with cinder block walls I can bolt the manifolds to pretty easily.  Right now I have a 90 degree elbow on the supply and return ends of the Logstor at the basement wall and a 1" ball valve after that.  From there, I could hook up a supply and return manifold and connect them with a flat plate exchanger in between because that would eliminate needing to get true 1" ID PEX and running the 1/2" domestic hot water PEX into that room would be much easier to do.  Then, from the manifolds I can have a loop for the coil in the ductwork, a loop for the garage heat, and a loop for the sun porch I'm turning into an interior room of the house.  I assume each of those three loops would get their own (smaller) circulator like a 007 or whatever winds up being appropriate.  I could simply turn off (and manual valve off) the loop in the coil if it's a warm day and I want to run air conditioning?  Or are you saying the 26-99 could circulate all of the loops and to just use ball valves to control them on/off as needed?  I actually did it that way at the old house except I did have a 2-way zone valve on the coil in that house and a relief valve between the manifolds that would dump excess pressure when the coil was "off".

The closer you can get the flat plate to the water heater the hotter your domestic water will be. But it'll probably work where you're describing.
In this drawing I'm including the flat plate in the primary loop. You could use a Delta p pump for the secondary with zone valves. It senses them opening and starts circulation.

That makes more sense now.  On the other hand, if I put the manifolds in the room with the water heater and furnace, it does get the water heater the hottest water and it reduces the amount of piping I need to run to the coil, the water heater, and sun porch.  All I'd need is some true 1" ID pipe from the Logstor to the furnace room.

1/2" pex for domestic cold main? Just 1 bathroom? You don't NEED 1" ID pex for the loop to the heat exchangers; your short run in 1" nominal would hardly be noticeable to the 26-99. I'm not sure why you're so adamant to use those manifolds, but depending on spacing of the ports you may or may not have heat creep no matter what due to ghost flow. Seeing as you'll need to pull through a mixer for the future loop, if it were me, I'd still pipe the loop with 1" pex from where the Logstor enters the house, to the plate HX (as close to the WH as possible), with a 3 way Sentry to bypass the coil between heat calls, and 1" back to the Logstor return. Use a small circ to move the garage loop with a pair of closely spaced tees between the house coil and the Logstor, and another circ to pull through the mixing valve for the future loop with another pair of closely spaced tees after the garage loop. You need to have either hydraulic separation or flow checks to avoid ghost flow. If the manifold has 4 ports less than 6" apart, you could easily make this work with just one manifold or even both in series with the extras valved off. If they are more than 6" apart, you will need flow checks. Pick your poison, but I'd opt for hydraulic separation personally- flow checks suck

I agree a bit of 1" regular pex won't affect things all that much on the main loop. You could use 1 1/4" if you were at all concerned, it's getting readily available now online  But I'd do 1" myself. I rarely use 1" on secondary loops if it's just to one or two air handlers on short loops, 3/4 carries enough flow.

Thought ghost flow was all but eliminated if you kept the T’s close to one another for the secondary?

Why would you add a ball valve between the tees? As you say, that pressure drop from the valve creates ghost flow. If piped correctly, there will never be a need for that ball valve

Is it dead reliable, no ghost flow, period? I've looked at those but never used them. Skipping the spring check would be nice but a trip back isn't cheap either.

Why would you add a ball valve between the tees? As you say, that pressure drop from the valve creates ghost flow. If piped correctly, there will never be a need for that ball valve
Some of these secondary loops (especially attic runs) can be tough to purge. Saves a lot of time. Maybe I'm not following you. I'm always ready to learn about a better way.

Those purge tees work fine from a hydraulic separation standpoint, but I guess I have never run into a scenario that has been tough to purge without the valve between. I just burn a pair of tees in 4" apart and call it a day, but then again I use drain valves on each zone for isolation and purging both. Horse apiece I suppose
