Title: Update Hydronic Heater list?
Post by: E Yoder on February 26, 2018, 12:35:47 PM
Anybody have an idea why the EPA hasn't updated their compliant hydronic heater list.. like since June 2017 ?! How's anybody supposed to know? Why put out a list at all?

I think the 250 passed the lab test but EPA has not put their certification on it yet. This is quite common that it takes a long time for all the paper work to shuffle. But I think they are free to sell as long as it has met EPA's standard in an approved lab.  Seems like it's not a high priority with EPA.

Would love if someone would and report back, I'm not on there.

It may not be a high priority item with the new EPA administration or possibly a suspended program.

So I looked and the compliance list for Hydronic Heaters has been updated.

https://www.epa.gov/compliance/list-epa-certified-hydronic-heaters (https://www.epa.gov/compliance/list-epa-certified-hydronic-heaters)

Quite a few Euro-style models that need storage to meet the requirements. So you have to sift through those and a lot of pellet boilers to find the outdoor wood furnaces that are listed.

So I looked and the compliance list for Hydronic Heaters has been updated.

Well updated is being generous, I think all somebody did was change the dates and reuse last years list. Only thing listed for Piney (P&M) is the Optimizer 350 and the chip burner. They haven’t made the 350 in a long time. It still has several companies that went bankrupt listed.

Our tax dollars at work.

Personally if I was going to buy a unit that required the additional storage to function, just buy a Garn and be done with it.

I know, the whole storage thing is kind of a carry-over from Europe in my mind. Cost just isn't factored in as much, whole different mindset. I guess it would allow the storage to be in a different location than the boiler.

I noticed too there were very few, if any, new units listed. Is there actually nothing being tested? The lack of enforcement doesn't help I'm sure.
The bankrupted companies with units are legal tested models on the books, just no manufacturing going on?

They now have a searchable database with efficiency, 2020 compliance, etc.
