HeatMaster / Whats the Difference?
« on: April 18, 2018, 08:32:58 PM »
What's the difference between a C500 and MF10000E?

I've scoured the website and all specs look identical.

Thanks in advance. Russ

HeatMaster / heatmaster mf10000e boiling?
« on: January 23, 2018, 06:59:33 PM »
It sounds like my water is boiling during the burn cycle.  180 off with 10 degree swing.  The boiler water temp never goes over 182 on the gauge.

While listening to it, it sounds like it boils right where the fire heads up and over the deflecting plate at the top of fire box.  This makes sense because the heat all has to come forward toward the door of stove, then up and over the plate and then to the back of the stove, up into heat exchange tunnel and back toward front of stove then up the chimney.

So,  where it hits the top of the firebox, there is only a couple inches of water separating the firebox and exhaust tunnel.

Has anyone else noticed this?  And for the experts out there, is it worth doing some engineering to return water toward this area to keep it from boiling?  Thanks.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / good top loader?
« on: February 05, 2016, 06:44:41 PM »
anyone know of a good quality top loader being built?

This would be for commercial application at welding shop.

The only two I could find were Shaver (no way) and Hoss (not much info found). Any others?

HeatMaster / new 10000E!
« on: May 08, 2015, 09:30:58 PM »
just picked up my new Heatmaster 10000E yesterday.   Its still on the trailer.   I am excited about it that's for sure.

I had to travel up to Minnesota to get it.  About 350 miles one way.  Its a big boy. Coming home against a 30+mph head wind I could really feel it back there

I was getting nervous because he said it had to be across the border into the US by may 15. Anyway, it should heat my new place with ease.   A 1200 sq ft ranch 24x24 wife's garage and 40x60 building for now and eventually another 30x30 man garage.

Got a bunch of small wood that was prepped for my gasser.  So first season will be small, dry wood.  Hate to say it but I'm looking forward to winter. :)

Fire Wood / Handling my firewood...again.
« on: April 14, 2015, 09:36:48 AM »
After cutting, hauling, splitting, and stacking 3 years worth of firewood in advance for the in town boiler, now moving to the country and want to take it all with me.

So, yesterday I threw and stacked the first load in my dump trailer.  16x7x3.5 = 3 cords.   Drove to new place and dumped it out where I get the opportunity to stack it again.

3 cords down and only 19 more to go :(

They say firewood will heat you 3 times.  This word is heating me up at least 5 times. :)

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Gonna miss her

Well, the fire went out due to warm temps. Guess its time to shut it off for the summer.  Kinda sucks turning the water heater back on.

For Sale / P&M Optimizer 250
« on: March 21, 2015, 10:51:12 PM »
I have for sale an Optimizer 250 from Portage and Main.

I bought this boiler last year and have only used it one season. Started early October and about to shut down pretty soon.

Runs excellent and no problems whatsoever, just moving to rural area and going to conventional style boiler.  I have an extra nozzle that will come with it. Also the brushes, tools, and owner's manual.  EPA phase 2 white sticker boiler.

Asking $8500.   Will deliver anywhere for $1/mile within U.S.

HeatMaster / C-series bigger?
« on: March 10, 2015, 06:22:54 PM »
Any chance they will make a bit larger C series?

The C375 looks interesting but would like one a little larger, like rated for 10,000 ft.

I know there is a MF10000e, but l like the oval, deeper firebox design idea.

I'm shopping again because moving to rural home in a couple months :)

BTW there will be a one y/o Optimizer 250 for sale soon. :)

I've been interested in installing a residential windmill for a while.  Anyone here have any experience with one?

General Discussion / Underground pex for heat without a boiler?
« on: February 11, 2015, 08:16:56 PM »
Could you heat a 40x60 Morton building up to say 45 Degrees F and keep it there in cold weather (Iowa) with just a loop in the ground and circulating pump?

Assuming its insulated of course.

Portage & Main / Loading the Optimizer 250 for best burn.
« on: February 10, 2015, 10:50:13 AM »
1st year with the Optimizer 250 and finally figured out what is working best for me when I load it.

First, I open the door and let it clear out.

Second, I run a 8" flat nose shovel with long handle down the sides of the fire box and basically pile the coals and ashes into a row right down the middle, covering the nozzle.

Third, load new wood on sides of firebox and on top of pile of coals.

Fourth, use the P&M tool that is 1/2" rod with a 90 degree bend 3 inches from the end and poke it through the pile of coals just enough to clear a hole for the air to get through to the nozzle.

Fifth, close the door.

this has been the best way, creating the least smoke with gasification happening the fastest way I've found.

If you have another idea, I'd be interested in hearing about it.

Russ.

Portage & Main / Design improvement for Ultimizer?
« on: January 25, 2015, 08:09:13 PM »
So, I am going to look at a rural home to purchase on Tuesday.  Therefore, I'm back on the idea of a conventional boiler and switching from the Optimizer 250 I am running now.

As I look at the Ultimizer design, I can't help but think it would be better if the baffle in the top of the firebox actually extended down into the firebox further to trap more hot gasses in the box before exiting out the top.  Anyone else think of this?

The only negative I could potentially see is that more smoke may come out of the firebox door when loading, but who cares?  Its going to belch out the door no matter what.

I modified my father in law's Hardy H2 with a plate that the smoke had to go around before exiting and he says it helped consumption.  How about someone extending that baffle down in the BL series to see if it helps?

Natures Comfort / 275G new boiler
« on: June 10, 2014, 08:32:17 PM »
I have a friend that just bought a new Nature's Comfort 275G.

It is just like the 325 G but a bit smaller.  Nicer than the 250 in that it has a larger fuel door and a taller but not as deep firebox.  I am picking it up in Indiana for him on Thursday.   I just happened to be traveling down I80 to Pennsylvania and coming back with an empty flatbed.  So, I am picking up his 275G and a couple 250s for the local dealer he is buying it from.

Ah, good times with boilers.

Portage & Main / Optimizer 250
« on: June 01, 2014, 06:59:55 PM »

A question for those in the know:  on this particular stove, which pipes on the back are supply and which are return?  It doesn't say in the owner's manual.

thanks, Russ.
