would it be worth it?
« on: January 25, 2015, 08:15:27 PM »

I was just offered 22 dump truck loads of logs from a out of town  company that's doing a large clearing job were I live. they were looking for a place to dump wood chips and in turn given the logs free. a buddy down the road from me wants all the chips I'm getting the logs. there's a lot of box elder, Poplar, ash and elm. would the Poplar and boxes elder be worth the hassle?  I'll be hauling some of it with a 14 foot dump trailer.  there also going to haul with there tri axle dump.

My opinion is if someone else is going to cut and haul to my place....IT ALL BURNS so I would take it. You will just have lower btus available from the softer wood.

Definitely worth it!!  Some better than others, but it all burns. Worst that can happen is you throw a couple more pieces in.

sounds good to me, when you get it home cutter up, and stack it in piles according to type of tree, then  I would slowly mix the soft wood in with the good stuff on cold nights, that's what I do if I have soft wood, ill mix one or two big pieces in with the hardwood, all good.

We burn everything, even the crap off the ground, it's usually already seasoned 8)
When cutting, we take the hard woods, but if there is a basswood or poplar in the way,, she comes down!!

We've been clearing a swath thru our wood for some new fencing and in the process have taken down some poplar..  Some if it is pretty good size, like 30" diameter stuff.   Anyway, I split it up pretty small and throw it in the boiler and it burns pretty darn good.  I mix it in with some ash and oak and I still get real good burn times..  So, I would not be afraid burn it at all, especially if they will deliver it..  Does not get much better than that...

Here's how I would decide:

If it's free, it's worth it.

If it costs $3,370.34 per full cord cut, split, and delivered, then it's not worth it: http://www.amazon.com/Wilson-Evergreens-B002-Split-Firewood/dp/B001KW2B7M/ref=pd_sbs_petsupplies_4?ie=UTF8&refRID=13WBN0RGMKMX92JC32R2
