Title: 19 years never drained
Post by: E Yoder on April 10, 2019, 04:50:56 AM
Swapped out a leaking CB Classic a few weeks ago. Hunted for a bit to find a drain. The plug was still foamed over, never drained in something like 18 years. ! Nice red-brown water..
Anyway, have any of you guys run that long without draining and flushing? Or seen it done?

My boss has the same boiler, drained once in 15 ish years.

I just completed my 5th heating season with the same water.  I have added a couple gallons of water every year and this year I added a fresh quart of boiler treatment.

Got a strainer filter right where my lineset enters the basement that I check every year and it has had minimal crap in it.  I look at the water when I clean that filter and it still looks the same as year 1 as far as I can tell.

May change it out this summer, I ran our (extremely hard) well water through a multistage reverse osmosis filter when I filled the boiler the first time, took several days to fill it up using that method.

Planning on doing the same when I change it out next time.

Despite better judgement, I'm going to flush and refill mine this summer with soft water after 3 winters. It's been fine with the hard water, always tested well, but there is a lot of iron in the water and it's getting kinda brown which I do not like.

By maintaining my water treatment and doing regular nitrite tests my water has always looked clear like drinking water. Yellowed or brownish water would signal the water treatment has not been maintained and I would suggest a flush, water refill and new treatment be necessary. 18 years before a corrosion leak issue with water not monitored or treated correctly is impressive in my mind.

That's what I was thinking. Very impressive.
