Smashed my thumb (warning graphic image)
« on: January 09, 2019, 04:08:00 PM »

I'm on my 11th season now I think, so I guess maybe I should feel lucky. About our fifth season in, my wife smashed her finger against the stove while loading, and broke her finger.   I smashed my thumb last night while loading the beast. I was wearing gloves, it didn't break any bone, but there was so much pain I didn't sleep until 7 o'clock this morning.  The pain is better now and I'm pretty sure I'll be able to sleep tonight.  You can see the hole in the center of the nail that I drilled late last night to help relieve the pressure.

Anyone else smash their fingers while loading, bad enough to cause problems the next day?
Commiserate with me.

Scratch - I believe the medical term for that is a boo boo.  I don't think anything hurts more than smashing your thumb against something especially when the thumb nail is involved.  Take care of that thumb and stay warm.  Roger

OUCH!!!!!!

Ya, been there... Done that....  Blackened my thumbnail more then once on the stove.
Don't think I did it up as bad as yours though.  Looks like you'll loose the nail.

Dropped a big chunk of locust off the top of the woodpile on my foot a few years ago. Crushed two toes breaking them in many places. Took my boot off and stuck my foot in the snow! Got everything put away and then got called out to work. Ended up working two days before going to the doctor and then not going to work for a month after that!

Whew, that looks nasty. I've bent a finger over backwards throwing wood in the stove so it wouldn't bend right for weeks. But that looks worse.
Hope you heal up soon.

Yep, did something similar years ago. Still had ole smokey and was gonna chuck a rather large piece in, went to take a step while tossing it in, knee popped and i stumbled. Smashed two fingers between the wood and door frame. Left a trail of blood to the house, wife went into automatic freakout mode. Made it to the bathroom, dug out the first aide kit. Nothing but big chunks o gauze so sent the wife for the scissors. She brought em and first thing I did was snip off the loose pieces of meat that were dangling, next thing she did was to toss her supper up. Got em all taped up and went back to screwing sub floor down as we were remodeling the kitchen at the time. Throbbed pretty good running the screw gun and I had a full bottle of Vicadin left from having a wisdom tooth pulled. Ate a couple and nothing so ate a few more and washed em down with canoe water, made it bearable enough to finish the subfloor.

Took a good while to heal but can’t barely find the scars now.

I did one real similar to that about 10 years ago, swinging a large hammer with all my might and holding a punch with the other hand up side down, something slipped, got out of calibration, and dead on the thumb.

Then comes the vagal response. The sight of blood and injuries don't bother me, but after an injury my scalp and tongue go numb, blood pressure drops, begin to sweat, and get nauseated. So I have to prop my feet up to prevent passing out. That is worse than the injury itself.

Been real fortunate over the years, as much as I've been involved in. Don't take safety for granted. And chainsaw injuries I hear about, ikes, wear chaps guys. I'd rather get shot than get a chainsaw in the leg.

I don't recall having any loading injuries (now that I said that, it'll happen today probably) besides the annual facial hair burn-off, but plenty of other dumb injuries related to hydronics lol. When I was a kid, the neighbor guy crushed his thumb between the block and CB Classic bad enough that he lost the thumb. Family friend took his middle finger 3/4 of the way off in the wood splitter too. Safety is no joke- no matter how mundane the task is or how good you are at it, take your eye off the ball and it's all over. At least once a year I'll be in the middle of soldering a series of joints like I've done 37 million times and melt my forearm to the 800 degree pipe I just soldered, just because I'm an idiot and forgot what I did 10 seconds ago. 4 times now I've been cutting some threaded rod or trimming down a pipe hanger and sawed into my finger with the band saw; one of those "man this is really going to suck if (insert variable here) happens" things and then that very thing you already knew would happen, happens. Took the tip of my thumb off a few years ago with a damn needlenose pliers. Trying to peel off a snap ring in a control valve and too lazy to clamp it in the vise so I held it with one hand and ran the pliers with the other. Snap ring came loose and plunged that sucker straight through my thumbnail and the pliers came out the bottom. All easily avoidable if you're smarter than me

Have you drilled yourself yet?

Guy in town was on a step ladder working on trailer doors, thru his right arm over the door to keep it from swinging away, then preceded to drill, how he didn’t feel it getting warm I don’t know but he was pushing hard, went thru the outer layer and right into his for arm, drilled some bone before he was done.

Yah, was using the big ole grinder with a knotted wire wheel on it.

Got in that night and the sock caught on something taking it off. Piece of wire from the wheel went right thru the jeans and into my shin.

Pulled it out and it preceded to go squirt squirt squirt. Must have skewered an artery or something. Had to use several layers of gauze and wrap it up well at night as for about a week if you bumped it or anything, squirt squirt squirt. Didn’t bruise or anything but was a bleeder which I’m not and I usually heal fast.

I thought it was actually kinda cool, wife was not impressed to say the least.
