Homerglide, I just noticed what brand boiler you use, I sold a few of them years ago and have lost track of them, how do you like it and how long have you had it?
Got the boiler in February of 2013. It has performed admirably from new to now. I have made a few modifications that were nothing more than a personal preference and am sure it would have done just as well in the stock form. Had just one issue at the start but was made right in a hurry by the seller (Zenon of NewHorizons). The problem was a pinched wire in the blowers electrical box that shorted out. Quickly remedied and been running well since.

So happy to have some old ones in good condition. All of the newer fuel containers have a coreless shrader valve on the backend for ventilation, works great.

I frequent two other sites of this nature and have not seen mention of this issue there. I have dozens in the junk box folder, each with a slightly different email origination address and each being added to blocked sender list. They keep coming.

Dirty scumbag who sold email list.

Anyone else receiving unwanted emails from some dam site (Hawken energy) on behalf of Hawken ceo? Every email gets marked as junk here but the dirty bagger keeps changing the sending address just a little bit so some get past the filter.

Sure would like to know what dirty sob sold my email address to the Hawken outfit.

Yeah, this is a new reply to an old thread. Just an FYI for whoever might be viewing this thread.

Fact about the Stihl MS170 is; the spark arrestor screen in the muffler must be removed to get great performance from the little gem. That dam thing clogs with carbon in a matter a just a few uses. It will eventually clog 100% forcing the exhaust out from between the muffler and exhaust port. Once the screen is removed, it will run like brand spanking new. I almost lost my temper and threw one into the swamp. Glad I didn't cause I was going to do a carb swap and muffler mod but found after pulling the muffler what the problem is. Just tossed the screen and have had many successful limbing chores completed since.

Did the Hawken email directory get sold to a third party? I am getting emails everyday. Even after I place each one into the junk emails folder and block the sender. The sending email address changes by a little bit each time. The email is full of links.

Here is an example of the sending email address, notice "on behalf of": <Warren=HawkenEnergy.com@mail135.atl81.rsgsv.net>on behalf of; CEO of Outdoor Boiler Care <Warren@HawkenEnergy.com>

Dirty s.o.b. has zero respect for others.
The truth is, I had never signed up for anything at Hawken or purchased their products. So, who gave or sold my email address to the sender of these bothersome emails?

Heatmor / Re: new heatmor and having huge issues
« on: December 08, 2014, 03:34:28 PM »

I am going to adding another 16 feet of baseboard  in the dining room and 5 more feet in the living room. I am hoping that will help some.

Thanks Roger!!!

I added some baseboard over the summer at my place too. Make it easy on yourself with air vents for bleeding the new lines. Best of luck to you for this heating season.

Shaver Furnace / Re: Adding water capacity with an external tank
« on: December 07, 2014, 08:03:30 AM »
Adding water capacity does not affect your BTUs/hr output; that is determined by how big your boiler is (firebox, fire wood size, etc).  You can only put a set amount fo BTUs into the system, based on OWB boiler sizing.

**All a buffer tank or Hydronic Seperator do is to help elimate the extreme temperature swings (up or down) in a system, not add BTU/hr capacity

ALSO REMEMEBER, that by adding water volume; YES you adding more hot water to the system, but when that water cools off you just have that much more water to heat back.  :-\  Which may or may not extend your calls for heat and reduce the reaction time of your system.
I agree with some of this. However, thermal storage allows the boiler to run full tilt for an entire load of fuel. Thus there is no standby loss of btu's from the firebox. Thermal storage is proven without a doubt to be more efficient. The down side is additional cost up front and space considerations.

Fire Wood / Re: kiln drying
« on: December 03, 2014, 08:36:58 AM »
Solar kilns are easy and economical. Visqueen or maybe even pallet wrap the bottom, top and all sides with drain holes on the floor. A sunny summer day it will easily reach the 160F temps. If I were to need spring cut oak for the coming season, this is how I would go.

Will that pithy wood carry more water content?
Don't know how large your firebox is, but if you load 100 pounds of wood at 25% moisture content, you are putting 3 gallons of water in the firebox. If you load 100 pounds of wood at 35% moisture, there will be 4 gallons of water in the firebox. If any part of the boiler is less than 135 degrees, there will be condensation on the cool surface. While the stove is idling, the moisture is not being forced out the stack and is clinging to the cool surface.

My setup will break even in 4 years. That includes $1700 in oak logs purchased. From here out I will harvest from a 12 acre lot while clearing a cottage site. Love the thought of free fuel and any house temp desired. Just say no to propane!

Plumbing / Have any luck with shark-bites?
« on: July 25, 2014, 04:51:35 PM »
I will do a few mods in the crawl space and really do not want to drain the bulk of what is going on in that part of the system. I am thinking of doing a quick cut and splice with isolation valves using shark-bites if they are considered reliable and then sweat in the mods. My 40 years of touching plumbing has always been with copper.

Any input is appreciated.
