Was wondering if anyone had done it, or thoughts concerning...
I bought a pre-built Earth brand 20" x 20" door for my homemade build. The door has a plate of steel that is spaced off the outside of the door about an inch into the firebox.
Was considering stuffing that 1" gap with some high heat fiber insulation, thoughts?

My buddy has a Shaver with a piece of steel which sounds similar to what you describe. It has 1 inch spacers and leaves an air gap between it and the door. We stuffed it with just plain old fiberglass insulation to see if it brought the door temps down. We figured that it would burn up after a few weeks. Its been in there for two years now, lol. It brought the door temp down huge. I think it hovers around 100 degrees now. Before it would be 350 sometimes.

Thanks, that sounds very similar to the Earth setup. I will try to get a pic and post it here...and think I will try stuffing the door too.
Still haven't fired it up but getting closer. ::)

Since I am heating the house well with my homemade outdoor wood/air furnace it hasn't been at the top of my list to get the homemade boiler up and going, just too many other things going on.
But it's gonna happen.

My friend and I insulated 3 Earth doors two years ago and they all worked fine. We spaced the inner part of the door out about two inches and filled them with kayowool high temp insulation. It made a huge difference in the door temp.

So, are you saying you took the existing plate that comes from the factory spaced at about a 1" gap, cut it off and placed it at about a 2" gap with longer spacers?
That's a good idea, I never thought of doing that. May give it a try. :thumbup:
I am surprised they don't insulate the doors right at the factory. There would be almost no additional cost (materials or labor) required to do it.

I'll agree they should insulate them as they are built. We called Earth before we did our doors and they said it would add to the cost of the stove with materials and labor and they had never considered doing it but they did not see anything wrong with doing it to ours. Our doors only cost a few bucks each for some metal and the kayowool. Seems to me the more BTU's you can keep inside the stove the better. With the added insulation, our doors are just warm to touch.
