Title: thermostat for infloor heat
Post by: sceptre74 on March 05, 2019, 01:24:35 PM
Is there different thermostats for different applications? I was told there is and if so, I'd like to know what is a good or the best one for infloor heat in a shop

The one I use is a AUBE, works great.  About $50

Would you happen to know the model number?

I use a lot of Honeywell T1 Pros for various systems. Cheap and reliable.

I'm having issues with the shop being a huge draw on the system. It seems like there won't be a call for heat sometimes beyond 24 hours. Someone suggested finding a thermostat that will turn on closed to the set point so this is what I want to try.

I don't know the model number of the AUBE thermostat that I have.  I was told that it was designed for hydronic floor heating, it has been in my shop now going on 14 years and works great.  When the room temp calls for heat, it turns the pump on and the pump runs for a short time and it will shut off and allow the water temp to recover and then turn back on automatically, it will continue to do this until it reaches the set point. there are 4-5 dip switches that you can setup to use it for different applications. If I recall correctly I got mine from Menards.  Hope this helps.

Yes it does. Would it happen to be this one? https://customer.honeywell.com/en-US/Pages/Product.aspx?cat=HonECC+Catalog&pid=TH135-01/U&category=TH135&catpath=1.2.28.3.74&rank=0&v1=Sort.1.Product.Rank&asc=1

I saw this thread and was wondering, since it cycles the pumps once every 24 hrs to prevent pump seizure, does it do this even in the summertime when there is no demand.  This would be great for me so I don't have to remember to cycle the pumps year round. Tim

From what I understand it will do it year round. I ordered one so I'll know soon enough!!!!

Your pump only runs every 24 hours because your supply water is too hot. A new thermostat is not going to fix that. Do you have a mixing valve in place? What is your water temp entering and exiting the slab?

Yes I do. It's coming in at 95 and leaving at around 77 78.

Must not be keeping it very warm in there? At that rate is roughly 5,000 BTU per hour per loop of radiant so unless this is a very large building it shouldn't be pulling so hard on the boiler to maintain temp.

I have it set at 60 and it's 32 x 44 with 10 foot walls I had the water coming in at 105 or so but dropped it and seems to be somewhat better.

Any idea how long it runs per cycle? Once per 24 hours can be deceiving, does it run for an hour or for 23 hours?

Sometimes it's for 1 to 2 hours, sometimes it's 4 to 5. It all depends on the temperature swing outside most times. I got the new thermostat but didn't hook it up yet. I have the batteries in it and noticed there is a 4 to 5 degree difference in the room temperature. I'm going to get it hooked up today and see if anything changes. If not I may send you a pic on my install to see if anything stands out.

Oh wow, very well insulated it seems. Ideally, for max efficiency, the pump would run 24/7 at the minimum water temp required to heat the space but that's unreasonable in most cases. Although 95* SWT is considerably lower than most already, your cycle times say it could be lowered further yet. Very impressive
