sometimes my stove will look like a blow torch for the first few cycles on a fresh fill up.It has a 3ft stack and will glow deep orange 10 or so inches out of the top, like a blow torch.I wonder if its creosote burning or its just sucking the flame 6 or seven ft up.Is that common for anyone else.

I would say it is a fan issue moving too much CFM.

Ever wonder how much heat loss you have? I added a secondary heat exchanger to my old wood doctor and gained 10 degrees on my return water temps before going back to the boiler on stack heat alone, looks funky but it worked.

Have slowed my fan down because of that flame problem and I installed a 4 foot stack because of concerns in the spring with dry weather.
Slim did your secondary HX look like this?

No I built my own, it was originally going to be the worlds biggest water bong to clean the smoke but it was so hot it steamed the water off and appeared worse than the smoke

yeah i see it all the time, looks like a roman candle for about 3 mins after a fill up , if there is a good fire going and a good bed of coals I will see this during a fill up , , i've been meaning to get a video of it , everything i've heard it cleans out the creosote so i haven't been concerned, my boiler is next to a creek and not close to any buildings so fire isnt a concern , was worried about my woodpile a time or 2

I went by the place in shelbyville, Tn where they make thees units a few weeks ago.  They walked me through the shop and showed the OWF being built and all the process.  Looks like a beast of a unit.  That is what got me to this website.  Now I have learned so much that I realize i don't know SH!T about OWF.  I plan on getting a OWF sometime this year.  They seem like great people at the shop.

I WENT AND LOOKED AT THE HOSS BOILERS THIS PAST WEEKEND AT A NEW DEALER THAT IS SELLING THEM CLOSE TO ME
THEY LOOK TO BE VERY WELL BUILT, BUT AS HE IS A NEW DEALER AND NOT EVEN USING ONE YET I DIDN'T GET TO SEE ONE IN ACTION
I WAS CONSIDERING ONE BUT I PRETTY MUCH LIVE IN A FIELD AND THE WAY YOU GUYS ARE TALKING ABOUT THE FLAMES AND AMBERS COMING OUT OF THE STACK IT SOUNDS LIKE IT MIGHT NOT BE A GOOD CHOICE FOR ME AND IT WOULD SEEM WITH ALL THE HEAT GOING OUT THE STACK THAT IT IS NOT THAT EFFICIENT ESPECIALLY WHEN THE MODEL NAME IS H.E.
HAVE ANY OF YOU GUYS THAT ARE USING ONE FOUND A WAY TO STOP THE FLAME THROWING? LIKE I SAID BEFORE I LIKE THE UNITS ESPECIALLY THE LARGE DOOR

rclay1981 not that it matters, in fact I kind of like it as I can't see for crap but your caps lock is on. ANY wood boiler in your environment has a fire danger involved and you should take that into consideration when placing and setting it up, if there are flames shooting out of the stack, you are certainly losing a lot of valuable heat as well!
