General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Storage tanks tied to wood boiler ?
« on: January 15, 2014, 08:58:57 PM »
Anyone have any knowledge around  using a large storage tank tied into a outdoor boiler to store your heat for later ie all night ?been reading a few sites and they claim that the boiler will only work 6-7 hours and then store that heat ? anyone have any experience in this , here is one site http://slatevalleyboilers.com/index_files/Heat_Storage_Tanks.htm

good thing its warm last 2 days , My temps on my boiler are staying about 90 -115 degrees last 2 days and wont get higher  , I thought maybe it was real wet punky wood but I cleared it out and put new in , I punched out the flue while it was so low and it didn't seem obstructed , I can open the door and flames spring up and get going good, I come back an hour later and open and no flame , just smoldering , the blower appear to be fine , its open and I can feel the air coming out through the tube underneath , its just seems its not getting enough air but i hear and see the fan running a usual and feel the air along the tube , it throws up a plume of smoke out the chimney, does seem like its not as strong as usual  , do the blowers fail or slow down ?  I took the fan  off 2 weeks ago and looked down the tube and it was clear

any thoughts

I was looking at some options around power in case the electricity went out so I still have heat in my 2 greenhouses

I know several of you went the generator route , I was actually thinking on getting a converter and hooking to my tractor and let idle in case of an outage , I have a diesel kubota and it will idle 2 days on a full tank of fuel

I see this unit at harbor freight , why couldn't i hook this to my tractor ( http://www.harborfreight.com/2000-watt-continuous4000-watt-peak-power-inverter-69662.html )  , run a line to my stove and a line to my 2fans , all I need for heat

my 2  pumps are wilo star 21 , pull .92 amps , my 2 fans are 20 inch fans  fans , I think 1 or even 2 of these hooked up in a circuit , pull the tractor up , hook it up and ill have power for my 2 greenhouses ( heat )

what do you think

they are testing your site to see the reactions and response times, LEAVING THEM UP THERE FOR 48 HOURS IS NOT GOOD , next step is they will script  user creation of 5-10 users and then you ll get hammered with thousands of posts all scripted rendering the site useless

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Good one for you
« on: January 30, 2013, 01:03:17 PM »
I had filled the stove up about 10 pm last night.  due to storms last night My electricity went out about 1100 pm  and has been off until 1130 am today ,A full 12 hours . I fully expected the temp to be about 70-80 degrees on boiler, temperature here have been mild low of 40 last night high of 50 today , when the electricity came back on I went around the boiler and looked and I have it set at 175 with a 10 degree differential, the temperature was reading 187 !!

keep in mind there was no pumps running or anything to pull the heat off, it just sat and smoldered all night

I know a lot of discussion has been going on about 1/2 fireboxes and allegedly how inefficient they are taking longer to heat up but it appears to me that it also swings  on the other side of the pendulum that they retain the heat twice as long ?? i was definitely surprised to see this setting at 187 after being off for 12 hours , i opened it once for about 2 mins today , thats it

interesting

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / whats going on here ?
« on: January 27, 2013, 06:51:28 AM »
Morning all , Saturday morning I got up to put wood in the fire and opened it up , still pretty much full, went around back and looked at temp and it was 68 degrees ! oh crape ! So took the wood out and looked and a bed of ashes had built up in the back basically blocking the 2 chimney ports, cleaned that all out and the boiler got up to 100 degrees, still not good , fire going but i notice when i open door it feeds it much more air and fire springs to life , fan is running fine feeding it air,  i can feel and hear it inside , so I look to the chimney , last night at 900 I'm running a 6 brush down it but only so far , it splits in to a y to 2 separate chambers, so last night I checked it stayed about 100 degrees, no more, fan running , smoke is coming out the chimney but not as much as usual , usually when i got a good fire going and open the door I get a roman candle for about 2 mins , no such thing today  , so i go back to the brush and use the handle end and run it thru both sides , it appears to be clear  and i can see it when i open the door if i run it all the way down ,

I don't believe its electronics, the sensor reads 100, its set at 170 , the fan is open and running , i believe its stopped up as I have been burning a lot of green and wet wood  , here a pic of the firebox ( new one ) how would you clean one of these out , like at I stated i used the handle end and was able to punch it through,

am I missing something here ? is there something else to look at for this symptom of the temp not going up ,

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Fire in the Hole - Finally- Hoss 400HE
« on: December 11, 2012, 03:09:46 PM »
finally got this thing hooked up , for right now just have the greenhouse hooked up , fired it up late yesterday afternoon  and I am very impressed and happy with it  , took about 3 hours to get up to temp and this thing will burn anything , with our weather the last 2 days all the wood is pretty wet , but it started right up and fire been going ever since

I built a heater for the greenhouse from a 20x20 water to air ex changer , a 50.00  fan from amazon and a 35.00 line thermostat and this thing has kept the green house right at 55 degrees where I set it , it cycles on and off  , I have never had heat that even in there , Im thinking bump it up 10 degrees and put light on a timer and my birds will start raising again

Just like to take a moment and thank all on here for the advice and answering questions, Jerry Warren at the factory where they make these has been awesome answering questions

thanks again

Electronics / wrong thermostat for greenhouse heater ?
« on: November 21, 2012, 05:02:47 PM »
I'm building my own heater for my greenhouse  , 22x22 water to air exchanger , 2o inch fan 3150 cfm and I bought a Honeywell RLV3120A1005/H Digital Non-Programmable Thermostat for Electric Baseboard Heating to turn the fan on and off as needed, i bought this because it was 110 volts not 24 , looking in the book it says not compatible with a fan forced heating system ( didn't say that in the description on amazon ) also says heating cycle length , 15 seconds,

so the question is did i buy the wrong thermostat

here it is on amazon http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002Z7EBBU/ref=pe_175190_21431760_M3T1_SC_dp_f1

thanks ahead of time

Plumbing / Theory question /Poke holes in it
« on: October 30, 2012, 05:11:23 PM »
so I've been back and forth about whether to run 1 or  2 lines for my house garage combo and another 1 or 2 lines for my greenhouse , bird building combo ,  basically I asked in an  earlier post  if i need to run one or 2 lines for my house with plate , and heat exchanger for furnace  and another for  garage with heat exchanger  or run all off 1  ,  and 1 or 2 lines for my greenhouse and another building that are 30 ft or so part or all off of 1 line set

got some very good advice from all here,

so when I say lines above I'm assuming each line has 1 feed and one return line of pex in it  but another thought has creeped into my devious little mind , what if one were to break all the rules and run 2 pex pipes for the feed from the boiler to the devices and Then combine the returns  into one line , maybe a litttle bigger for the return effectively have a 3 line in each line ?? 2 feeds , 1 return

Tennessee Outdoor Furnaces / Finally got this Beast
« on: October 28, 2012, 04:25:25 PM »
I went and picked up my 400HE yesterday, this thing is a beast , I've got a full size 4wd ford f150 with the 5.4 and  I knew this thing was behind me the whole way , , thats one of the things that sold me on this model was it was made well and comparing to others they didn't come close to the weight

was able to drag it of with my tractor today, now comes the fun part , digging ditches , good thing I have a backhoe attachment or it would take me a good 2-3 years with a shovel with all the rock we have

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Shame on Me , Introductions
« on: October 28, 2012, 05:58:48 AM »
Hello , I am a newbie on this site . wanted to take a minute to introduce myself and acknowledge the great help I have gotten so far

I live in Tennessee and besides a house that is way to big( 5800 sq ft )  I also have a commercial greenhouse that we use for tropical plants ( my wife is a plant Nut ) and I raise cage birds , parrots conures ect ect . In my real Job I am a Design and Build engineer for Computer Systems and networks at a very large healthcare company

I ran across the concept for a OWB  in Louisville Ky at specialty nursery there ( Brians Botanicals , awesome guy ) and when I asked him how he heated all those greenhouses he showed me his Heatmor heater and I was intrigued  , currently in my house its all electric,   2 large heat pumps , 5 and 3.5 tons and My greenhouse is heated by a wood furnace from rural king , its ok , but  when its cold I am up feeding the fire every 4 hours and it just cannot keep up when the temp is below 32 degrees , we lost a lot of plants the last 2 years and filling the stove up at 1000 pm , getting back up at 3 am  to fill up and then again at 7 am  is for the birds , literally

so I started shopping around for a OWF , looked online and dealers pay Close attn , this is why I choose who I choose , I want to see a unit and preferably hooked up and running , seems I called several dealers and None had anything in stock in my area and this was in March,    I did manage to look at a couple not hooked up  and then I stumbled across the Tennessee outdoor furnaces somewhere in a forum , I looked them up and not only did they have them in stock , had one running there and invited me to their shop to see how they were made , that sold me , seeing the way they were put together made the difference, like looking under the hood of a car when buying, and someone else here on the forums mentioned it was like buying a car , everyone has preferences , anyway  enough on that ,

SO I just brought my unit home yesterday and will be hooking it up over the next month

anyway Id like to thank and acknowledge some here who have answered my questions  past and I'm sure a lot more coming , RSI, yoderheating , scott7m ,stewie3500,bajonesy77   and the list goes on and on

thanks all !awesome and informative site

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / What / How if No electricity
« on: October 28, 2012, 05:29:54 AM »
Morning all , In light of the weather coming and a question I have had a while while considering my design  , what is the recommended method of redundancy to keep these running when the electricity goes out? it seems to me that this is the single point of failure , no electricity no heat ?? as I am doing this not only for my house heat but a greenhouse that has tropical plants and cage birds that cannot freeze. At a bare minimum I see the need to have the circuit for the OWB  for the pumps and the furnace fan  for heat to keep somehow running , how and what are some of you doing to  address this . I remember the ice storm of 93 in this area and we had no electricity for a week

thanks all in advance , awesome site and people
