Chain repair
« on: November 01, 2017, 06:05:32 AM »

Is there a simple tool or device used to take saw chains apart and put them back together. We don't have very many if any saw shops in my county here in Ky. The last one went out of buisness last year. I'd like to be able to repair my own. I have a chain right now that's too long and need couple links took out. If any of you know a tool that's affordable for what I'm talking about I would appreciate It.

Taking apart is easy if you don’t have the tool, grind the worked end of the link off. You can put em together without the tool as well as long as your careful. Get a repair link, put it together on a anvil, then take a hammer and peen the end of connecting link. I fixed my 404 chains on the processor like this before because none of the saw shops had a tool that could handle 404 chain. I’d check northern tool or baileys and just get the right tool, it will be able to break the chain and reassemble.

Thank you sir. I worked at a hardware store as a teenager way back in the 70s and shortened and lengthened chains as well as sharpened them. I remember a tool we used. I just can't remember the details. I have a saw I use 20 inch as well as 24 inch bars on it. Had a log drop while cutting it and it pinched and bent my bar pretty bad. I tried straightening it but never could get the snake shape completely out, so I'm gonna just use it now as 24 inch only. The smaller saw I just bought does a great job on the 10inch and down and the 24 inch will take care of the rest. Wanted to lengthened those 20 inch to 24 inch. I have a couple chains that are damaged even the one that I pinched that I could take links out of. I know this sounds complicated but without a shop to depend on I have to improvise.

I also found a chain repair tool for roller chains etc. Would that work in a saw chain? It's a lot cheaper. The one on message above was 45.00, roller chain repair tool 19.00

roller chain breaker might work on a saw chain, but if you get the proper tool it will not only break the chain but peen the ends when you reassemble.

The break and mend doesn’t look bad actually, made in the USA as well. Most saw shops had a breaker then one of these to peen the rivet ends.
