Chainsaw oils both bar and 2cycle
« on: November 17, 2017, 04:40:44 PM »

In your honest opinions, is the higher priced name brand oils that much better. Especially bar oil at half the price at Rural King than major brands. Is the stihl and husky 2 cycle oils that much better?

All I’ll use is Stihl bar oil and two stroke oil. Dad’s bought Tractor Supply stuff before, you could definitely tell it’s thinner.

Strangely enough, just had the woods logged, I couldn’t hardly believe it but the loggers were using old engine oil mixed with STP for bar/chain lube.

When I bought my Stihl MS311, if I purchased their 2-stroke engine oil the warranty on the engine went from 2 years to 4 years.  As for it being better, I have no idea and I'm not taking any chances.  Roger

My big saw is a Husqvarna and I have a lot of trouble with the oiler stopping up on it. You think I could poor some of the eve tone and ATF mixture in there and swish it around a little and pour it out that it would be a good way of cleaning the oil tank. Or if you have other suggestions I would sure entertain them.

I use Stihl 2 stroke oil for my 25 y.o. 032. They recommend it, so I use it.  However, I do not use Stihl bar oil. I go through a chain every couple years = 18 cords.

For 2 cycle I primarily use MAG1 but have used others. All mixed at 4oz. oil to 1 gallon of gas. In 30 years and 5 different brands of saws Ive never blown one up or had any engine problems.
For bar oil I use Husqvarna, Stihl, or Jonsered in the summer and the cheap stuff in the winter. There is defiantly a difference.

I use whatever 2 cycle I find on sale and have been know to mix my TSC bar oil with used motor oil. Been doing it that way for 30 years. Never had any problems.
The only time I worry about oil brand is in my wet clutch motorcycles. Nothing worse than friction modifiers on a clutch...

Roscoe do you feel the cheap bar oil flows better in cold temps? Is that why the switch up? I use the stihl oil blue and red. One in winter the other in the summer. I been working on the big saw this morning and found the hole in the bar that lets oil get to the chain was stopped up with something. Never did figure out what it was and it wasn't easy to get cleaned out. Finally blew out with air compressor after soaking in penetrating oil for a while and using small nails and wires to poke at it. Oiling perfect now.

Always use Stihl 2 stroke oil. In talking to the local Stihl dealer, I was informed that 95% of the burned engines that come through his shop were using something other than Stihl oil. As far as bar oil, I use whatever is cheap. Never had any issues except for the Fleet Farm brand whatever it's called, that crap was like water

I've got a stihl 390 that's not oiling. Blew it out with air. The plastic screw that runs the oiler looks OK... I'm stumped.

I primarily run Save a Chain 30wt bar oil all year. Sometimes Cenex bar oil when I can get it. I really like that stuff.

Saw gas is Amsoil Sabre 32/1 in 110 race fuel because all of the saws except 1 are far from stock. The 510 Dolmar (stock) eats anything.

I would check that filter on the end of the hose in the oil tank then take the bar off and make sure the driver groove and oiler orifice are spic and span.

Then next culprit to me would be actual oiler assembly itself.

Yeah you are correct Bluegrass. Primarily for start up in cold weather. After the power head gets hot you can run the good stuff

Is this a thread about oil choices or saw repair???????

Guess I'm to blame for that. My last message I talked about using the stihl oil and then I talked about how my bar was gummed up. Guess the two go together in that respect. That lets me know the other post on here that said he uses the cheap stuff and has been for 30 years without any problems is giving me options on my bar oil.
