I'm curious of thoughts since there's guys with EPA approved units and others not and both (usually) swear by whatever they have.

I was wholeheartedly planning on building this summer but the appraisal came back $60k short of what I needed on my 1900 sf new home on 40 acres.  With that, my wife and I have decided to wait another year. 

I budgeted a Portage and Main BL 2840 ($9000) into the cost of the new home, but since not building, do I buy now or roll the dice with what I can buy next year or two years from now when I actually build??? 

I have the space to store it.  I could go with a cheaper unit like Ridgewood, but that doesn't make enough difference to build a home and I still like how the P&M appear bulletproof.  BUT, anything not EPA approved will not be available one year from now!!!!!!!!!

I'm just curious what thoughts are from people on here?  I hear rumors of EPA approved units of $12k for smallest square footage.  I'm just thinking that paying $9k now will be cheaper than $14k later...

I have to heat 3000 sq ft house, 576 attached garage, and 1200 detached workshop.

That's the gamble Lamont, I think that is the reason why we are having such success with the B-L in the states they are allowed in, nice stove, people like it and are afraid they will not be able to buy it next year, it is your investment and you should make that decision, best of luck

 Lamont, would the 2840 be enough for your heat load?  IF you purchased it now could you store it and still install it at a new location after the new regulations take effect??

That's really only a question you can answer yourself, if you think its a good idea to buy now before the house then do it. If money isn't a problem you could just get a gasser after you build I'm sure you'd be happy with the Optimizer or any other quality unit. Just have to do what makes sense to you.

 There will be units out there for much less than $12k. For example I know Heat Master has a unit that is very advanced that will sell for less than $8k. I'm sure the market will correct itself or a couple companies will begin to dominate.

I think you are correct there Yoder, I think it will not be good for the small manufacturer.
