General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: shop heat
« on: February 28, 2012, 09:29:48 AM »
Thanks for the detailed photos NewToIt. Did you make or buy the louvers that you have on the front of your HX? I could not find any and did not want to manufacture them so I just installed mine at the ceiling with about a 10 degree down angle.

Just replied to your other post with a description and photo of my setup.

Not going to waste space uploading another copy of the photo.

I know that a typical squirrel cage blower is going to be quieter, however my Dayton fan is noticeable but not objectionably noisy.

This is how I am heating my 28x28 garage. It is a 16.5x21 HX with a Dayton Blower assembly attached. I mounted it to the ceiling joists using unistrut and 1/2 inch threaded rod. I have a Erie T.A.C. 3-way zone valve and a Honeywell R8285A1048 Fan Control which includes a relay which is mounted to a 4 inch box at the ceiling.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Heat draw from a plate exchanger
« on: February 26, 2012, 08:16:30 AM »
Well, I have  5 x 12 - 20 plate exchanger with 1" supply and returns and see a drop of about 22 degrees across it when running my tub spout full open. But, note what my brazed plate exchanger dealer states that Any brazed plate heat exchanger can have higher or lower performance data based on temperatures, flow rates, and other variables.

That being said yours is probably about right.

Guys had the same problem and have a I have a fix - you need a two stage thermo that has and adjustable differential....here is my post just a few down from this one...

http://outdoorwoodfurnaceinfo.com/forum/index.php?topic=1179.0

Well, sure, if I wanted to invest in another expensive thermostat I would. My solution allowed me to keep my existing Multi-stage thermostat by adding a simple $15 thermo limit switch.

I would suggest you go to the following website and enter information about your addition to determine how many BTU you need, then determine if the two 5 foot baseboard heat radiators are sufficient and then determine how many CFM you can blow past them to extract enough BTU from them.

The guy I bought my used CL5036 from had actually done this. He was pleased. His wife not so much as I understand. But it saves energy.

That explains the 110, what does the R stand for?

GM- Is your dealer close? Or did he ship it to you?

My guess is that is a mfg code for custom faceplate for CB. My dealer is about 30 miles away, hence the reason I bought this even though I wasn't sure I would need it.

So this is the right one?

http://www.dwyer-inst.com/Product/Temperature/TemperatureSwitches/DigitalPanelMount/SeriesTS2/Ordering

Looking at TS2-010F* (TS2-011 is C*)

I just can't find the TS2-110R

Yes, I believe that is it. I think I only paid $56 for the one from my CB dealer.

Probe came with it, but it does just plug in.

This model is specific for CB, though I think it is just because the bezel says Central Boiler.

Well, thinking my controller was allowing the boiler to overshoot I bought a new one several weeks ago from my CB dealer. Turns out the controller wasn't defective, it was just a matter of the outdoor temps being too warm for my setting. Once the daily temp got below 40 I have had no problem. So now I have a spare. I can tell you that it is made by Love Controls in Michigan City, IN. Model# is TS2-110R. www.lovecontrols.com

Central Boiler / Re: How clean should the firebox be?
« on: December 22, 2011, 10:34:51 AM »
I thought that what Ashtrol was supposed to do was raise the pH of the ash that sits on the bottom of the firebox in CBs and with moisture can create acid which will eat away at the firebox.

Central Boiler / Re: water driping from door

I was told that i should use a zone valve to stop the flow thru the heat exchanger when the fan is not runing. It kinda made sence since the exchanger is below the furnace and the heat is always going into the furnace and fan and not just into the vents as a updraft would do. I do know heat + electronics is not good and can shortin the life. Does this make sence? I wonder if anybody with downdraft furnace has experianced this.

Well you are correct that heat rises and will enter your furnace cabinet and affect the electronic components 24x7. However, in spite of the fact that 185 degree water is flowing, without a blower forcing air across the exchanger I don't know how many BTU will be dissapated from the water.

We need a mechanical engineer to calculate or estimate that,

Or if you already have this installed, and it is running without a zone valve bypass you could use a thermometer to check the temp rise in the electronics compartment of your furnace during prolonged periods of your furnace blowere not running.

Thanks. How long will it do this? Also another question i have is how importaint is it to use a zone valve for my heat exchanger as i have a down draft furnace? Will the constant heat cause any problems?

I installed a three way zone valve on my system (upflow) so that I could run my furnace blower 24x7 if desired, and so that I can still heat my DHW in non heating seasons without introducing heat into my A/C. Some people simply put a manual 3 way valve in to bypass the heat exchanger on the furnace in non-heating seasons.

Hi Dean,

Thanks.

If/when you have the time, upload some of your photos.
