With these Feb. temps being hot and cold it gave me some time to experiment. I have come to the conclusion that my OEM blower ain't enough. With the blower running the stove smoke is there, but with blower off and the ash pan door (allowing natural draft) open there is very little to no smoke. So it leads me to think that I need a bigger (cfm) fan. The ashes have been cleaned out so they are not blocking the airflow. I checked the fan at the beginning of the season and it was clean enough I thought. I will check it again this weekend. It's supposed to be warm again. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I am burning seasoned oak so it can't be the wood.
 Thanks

There is a saw for sale in the local adds its a Stihl MS270C. pics shows it to look "newish" Says it starts easy and runs good. It has an 18" bar and they are asking $225 for it. I don't know anything about them. Anybody care to advise me on it? Is it worth the asking price? Is this model a good size saw?
 Thanks

Hardy / H-4 I beams
« on: November 12, 2013, 05:22:42 PM »
I had a thought that I wanted to run by those who are familiar with the 3 grate H-4 set up. You know that dead space between the I-beams and the side walls? I was thinking that I drill out the I-beams and put several holes in the vertical part to let the sides breath so the wood that falls down in this dead space would have a chance to burn also. Anyone tried this yet? I cleaned mine out the other day and there was large chunks of unburned wood in there. I thought this can't be a good thing. What are your thoughts? Can you see any reason this won't work?

This may be a can of worms I'm gonna open but here goes:
What kind of 2-cycle oil do you use for your 2-cycle engines and why?
Would 2-cycle marine oil be bad for older chainsaws and why?

Hardy / aquastat setting
« on: September 12, 2013, 03:22:59 PM »
Okay Hardy guys, what does the aquastat setting on the H-4 set at? Mine was used when I got it and the previous owner had it set at 140. Sounded kinda low to me, so I bumped it up to 170. I have read where some stoves can be set for different hi-low temps. I don't see that option on mine. I have the factory Honeywell and it just has one adjustment screw. I have built my first fire just to play with it some and to figure out just how it works. Plus heating my DHW as a bonus. My hot water is hot but not so much I have to used the cold with it while washing my hands. Tips, tricks, and all advise is welcome. Oh, is a rain cap a necessity? Thanks Kevin

Hardy / lifting the boiler
« on: August 29, 2013, 02:31:53 PM »
Has anybody tried setting there Hardy on cap block just to get it a little off the pad? Seems it would be easier to clean out the ash pan and also give more room to work with the pex on the Install.  Thoughts?

Plumbing / plumbing

Well I finally got my insulated pex in the ground. I was wondering how to figure the length of pex to leave out of the ground for hookups at the stove. I need to cut back the insulation and then the pex but how does one go about measuring for the length? I don't want to be telling one of those "I cut it twice and its still too short" stories . Am I overthinking this? Also do most people use 90 deg elbows where the pex comes through the wall or those sweeping bend brackets?

Plumbing / Armstrong H 32 Circulating Pump
« on: May 20, 2013, 06:19:50 PM »
Found this pump  in a local craigslist add. Says new in box for $250. Looks to be less than half price of one anywhere else but at 1/6 hp is it way too much overkill? Just wondering.

Plumbing / air exchanger
« on: May 08, 2013, 10:10:53 AM »
I'm getting ready to gather my parts and start my install. Looking at my heat pump inside unit, I'm not real sure as to where to put the HX. Above my A-coil is the fan and the the plenum get narrow going to the main trunk plenum. (15.5"W x 11" D x 29" H). I have a 1400 sq ft main floor house with a full basement (only 1/4 is finished) and I will be heating all of it plus the DHW. There is a space below the A-coil that I could install but thats where the return comes in. I found A Hardy H-4 used that I will be installing. Thanks for any help.

I was all set to buy a Heatmaster, but this deal has me thinking that If it works half as good as I'm hoping I will make money on it even if If its junk I can get my money back on scraping it to the metal recycle places.....

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Found another OWB company
« on: March 31, 2013, 06:52:26 AM »
Anyone know anything about American Royal wood stoves? I ran across them yesterday on my continuous hunt for the best quality and best priced stove to purchase. I talked to the owner and about like everyone else I've talked to, his is the best. I did like the price I was seeing. I know that you get what you pay for......but there are some times you pay too much for what you get.  Any thoughts?

Hawken Energy, support only / I've looked at them all
« on: March 29, 2013, 04:50:23 PM »
I've looked at them all and spent hours on the phone and the web. Everybody I have talked to has the best stove out there. Some I have called to ask about said they had trouble just getting the brand I was asking about, but they also sold this "other" brand that was as good? I have looked into the stainless and the mild steel and the rolled steel. The dealer that struck me the most helpful was my local Hawken dealer. He answered my questions and we discussed other brands as well. He even suggested that I should call the factory and talk to a tech guy. I sent an e-mail to them stating that I may have a few technical questions and was looking at buying in the future. I soon had a message left on my home answering machine and before I had a chance to call back they had called me again. I talked to a very nice lady and she let me talk to their tech guy. He had explained how a few things worked on the stoves and why they had went that way in the design. I was concerned why other designs had different features and theirs was much simpler sounding. I was assured that they had tried the other ways and they didn't work very well for their design.  Unless some one can tell me why I shouldn't get one, I do believe I am going with a Hawken HE 1100. They are the only one that has a 20 year non prorated on the fire box and is made from structural steel. Thanks for letting me rattle on and I look forward to any or all replies.
