Central Boiler / Re: Selling my house
« on: March 06, 2021, 05:12:32 PM »
Sorry to hear that Roger.
But I'd agree, call CB or the dealer.
Are you thinking of getting one installed at your new house?

I have reached out to CB and they sent me a link showing me of what I need to do to move the ownership to the new owners.

I've given it some thought whether I'll install one or not but it will depend on how high the fuel costs gets.  If it gets too high and doesn't show any signs of coming down, I'll seriously consider having something installed.  I'll be putting in a mobile home.  They come with a history of being cold.  Well, like everything technology improves and the building techniques of a mobile home improved as well.  They no longer use aluminum wiring and all exterior walls are 2X6 construction.  It'll be LP heat, cooking and drying of clothes.  The only down side is the water heater will be electric.  I'd prefer LP but they don't make a mobile home rated LP water heater.

Central Boiler / Selling my house

Hi all - The subject title says it all, I'm selling my house.  The town in which I was raised and the house in which I have lived in all my nearly 60 years, I have pretty much been taxed out of it.  I'm looking ahead a couple of years to retirement and I will not be able to handle the tax burden alone so in January I decided to put it on the market.  On March 26th the new owners will be taking possession of it along with the OWB, I'm not taking with me.  Anyone know the procedure how to turn ownership of the OWB over to the buyers so CB knows I no longer am the owner?  The new owners seem very intrigued about it and want to learn all they can to operate it safely.  Thanks,  Roger

When I looked at the old blower I noticed there is end play of the shaft of approximately 3/16 to 1/4 inch.  Do you know if the end play is typical for this type of blower?  I haven't removed the replacement I put on the OWB, it's in use.  I'll remove it at the end of the heating season so I'll check it then.  Roger

I go to the store buy a 20oz bottle of water.  Drink it then rinse it thoroughly and fill it with OWB water.  I've never had trouble with this approach.  Roger

Yesterday afternoon I had to get something from the basement of my house.  For giggles I looked at the blower I removed to get a better idea of where the oil ports are on it.  It appears that the blower CB put on it at the factory doesn't have oil ports on it.  There is no way that I can oil it.  When I get a few minutes of free time I'll make a run to my dealer with it and ask him to show me where it is.  Plus, I want to get another spare.  I don't like not having one on hand.

My 750 HD came with a fan with no oil ports, and when the fan died the first winter (on inspection, the copper winding had managed to break) the replacement did not have oil ports either.  Take a look at the support doc on fan maintenance at https://centralboiler.com/support/articles/combustion-air-fan-maintenance/ - "NOTE: If the decal on the fan housing indicates to oil the bearings at the end of each heating season, use the following procedure. If there is no decal, the fan does not require oil."

That document also shows where the oil ports are for the ones that do require oil.

Thanks for the tip.  When I get a few minutes I'll have another look at it.  I hope it's something as simple as that.

Central Boiler / Re: Server failure?

It appears that CB learned their  lesson regarding upgrades to the Fire Star.  I received an email from them late last night stating they'll be performing some upgrades and we may lose Fire Star connectivity for a short while this morning.  I looked at the graph and sure enough, connectivity was lost somewhere around 6:00 this morning and restored not too long after.

I experienced that samething so I sent an email to Tyler the IT guy at CB.  He said they had trouble doing a server update and it caused all kinds of trouble for them.  They finally got it done and the wifi link to the firestar has been restored.

I can't stress enough the importance of having extra parts on hand for your model of OWB.  Last evening around 6:00pm I put wood in my CB Edge 550 HD Titanium for the next 12 hours.  Around 6:45pm I decided for giggles check to see how she was doing via the firestar using wifi.  The water was having trouble getting up to temperature and the temperatures in the reaction chamber was having trouble rising as well.  SO, outside I go to investigate hoping it's a simple fix.  I opened the firebox door and had rather nice fire going but the water temp wasn't rising.  So I took the poker and made sure that nothing was restricting the air flow between the charge tube and reaction chamber.  It was at that point that I realized the combustion fan was making some really weird noises.  After opening the door to the area where the fan is located I noticed it wasn't rotating that well.  Off to the basement in the house where I store my extra OWB parts.  I removed the old fan and replaced it with the new one.  What a difference that made.  The reaction chamber temps immediately started rising as well as the water in the OWB.  After watching it for a few minutes I went back inside and relaxed.  It's been running fine ever since.  The operators manual states to oil the fan every spring during the spring cleaning.  Well, I forgot that part.  I'm guessing oil is important to some motors.  :)   Roger

General Discussion / Re: Coldest Weather Of The Season On The Way
« on: December 24, 2020, 01:49:25 PM »
The weather here in New England (New Hampshire) sure has been screwy this year.  A week ago we got 2 feet of snow in 8 hours, some people received 42 inches of the stuff.  Starting tonight and into tomorrow we're expecting rain with wind and then it's supposed to get cold, on Saturday the temps are not to get out of the upper 20's.  Roger

Central Boiler / Re: Installing a New CB Edge 750 HD this weekend!
« on: November 20, 2020, 11:38:13 AM »
Update - Starting year 3 with Edge 750HD. Everything is still original, no issues and operation has been a breeze. Took right off again and had water up to 185 temp in 1 1/4 hours from 48 degree start up. Looking forward to another great year. Always great turning off my water heater breaker. I  prefer the Edge wood heat over my propane heat. Feels warmer throughout house. You have your Edge up and running yet Roger?

boilerman - I've it running for a little more than a month and half into my 2 winter with it.  It's been running flawlessly the entire time, even through the 70 degree days we had a couple of weeks ago.  It's great not hearing the oil boiler run for heat and hot water.  On a side note, I sold my old E-Classic 1400 this past weekend.  I got $600.00 for it.  A young couple bought it and I didn't want to rip them off.  The air channel's welds are all coming undone and needs some TLC.  She sat for about a year and half without any water in it.  I made sure I was clear, I told the buyer that I cannot and will not guarantee nor warranty the unit.  It could last a month, 6 months, a year, etc... who knows.  He was glad I mentioned this to him.  I tossed in a few extra parts I had purchased for it and he was happy with that.

Have a great Thanksgiving.

Roger

Central Boiler / Re: Firing her up this week.

Fired up here the other day. Last few years its been one day earlier each year for some reason?

Wouldn't you know it, I fired up the Edge 550 on Tuesday when it was pouring rain, cold and raw with wind out of the northeast, today the weather is supposed to be sunny and in the low 70's.  We're expecting rain and colder temps tomorrow and Saturday (it may not make it out of the 40's on Saturday) so I do not feel I've jumped the gun on firing her up.  Roger

Central Boiler / Firing her up this week.

Hi all - I have the week off this week from work so I have decided to fire to the CB Classic Edge 550 HD, as soon as I get some other work out of the way.  This old house isn't as warm as I like it (lower 60's, prefer mid 70's) so I'm going to fire her up to break the chill.  I won't miss hearing the oil burner running to heat the DHW either.   So, off to another season of OWB heat!  :)   Roger
