Splittin' wood
« on: January 29, 2009, 04:41:12 PM »

Used up most of the smaller stuff that I got so far and all I have left is rounds that are anywhere from 30" to 50"
Booked a rental of one of these to use this weekend.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBgFcMgaNqc

85.00 a day,  renting it on Saturday and get to use it Sunday for free since their closed.

I'll try to get some pics for you and let you know how it goes.

Also gonna be taking lots of pics and measurements cuz my brother and I plan on building one of these ourselves.

Oh man I want one of those.  Do you know how many hours I've spent wrestling with big stuff like that just to roll it onto a vertical splitter.  It's almost impossible to do it by yourself even if you just have to hold one end of the log up to get the wedge to start in a place where it will actually split the wood.

So I rented this thing:

Here's what I started out with:

This is the kind of size we're talking here... Take note of the metal desk on the left...

The thing was a little tweaked in the first place.  I pointed it out to the rental guys but they said don't worry about it.   Obviously... it was something to worry about it...  This was after about 6 logs or so.

Yeah... it's not supposed to look like that...

Nuther shot:

As you can see... still a bunch of wood left after I brought it back to them

This is what I ended up with for now.  They tell me it'll be new and improved by next weekend.

Other than the gaping tear in the wedge and the twisted, mangled steel that looks like a mean splitter.   ;)

Just to verify: they're not blaming you, they're fixing it, and they are returning it to you at no additional charge, right?

Yeah they're not blaming me.  They gave me back my check and are hoping that I'll rent it next weekend.  I probably will.

Built one of these for my bobcat, same thing happened got into a knot gave it more throttle and tore the wedge right off, probelm, relief valve on bobcat is pretty high. And with 4 way wedge if piece get pinched between cross wedge and I-beam, wood can only compress so far. So now looking into one of those round spiral splitter that you can hook up to auger drive unit. Because the jackhammer just bounced.

I built mine, and it did the same thing the first time. Then I added braces, and wings on the main wedge, and its been great.Mine is a 5" cyl,it will literally sheer most trees under a foot in diameter.Relief on my Cat is 3300PSI.With a 5"cyl,thats a loto f power.I built mine with a beefy slide rail setup,so when your splitting twisted wood,or lifting 800 lb rounds,,it wont break it.
