General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Oil is now so cheap I'm giving my OWB a break!
« on: January 12, 2016, 05:18:23 PM »
Today I got my oil tank filled for $1.69 Gal and if I pay in 10 days I can knock another 2 cents off. Last year I went through some of this years wood so I am switching the house/domestic back to oil and just use the OWB to heat my "Man Cave" shed where my old dog lives and I relax. It's a 12 X 22 shed with a cast iron radiator and I keep it about 62 degrees, only need to fire the wood off once a day and use very little. Maybe this way I'll get caught up on my wood cutting.

Portage & Main / Upper door on ML30 rusted out; Update
« on: December 22, 2015, 05:37:13 PM »
First off what happened to the P&M dealers? The upper door into the smoke passage on my 5 year old P&M ML30 has the inner liner rusted thru. Since I couldn't locate any nearby dealer I sent an e-mail to P&M explaining and I got a call the next day saying they will send a new door on their dime. Overall it's been a good stove but I do get more moisture in the door areas than I think I should.

Equipment / New Saw for my birthday.
« on: November 11, 2011, 08:15:24 PM »
I bought a new Stihl MS 261 today. My birthday isn't for another 3 weeks but since I'm also a veteran I told my wife I'm getting it now, it is Veterans Day. Tomorrow I will see if it was a good choice.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Stack through roof question.
« on: August 03, 2011, 09:18:50 AM »
I just put up a 14 X 15 metal roof over my stove. The smoke stack will go through about 3 ft from the lower edge on the back side. The roof is about 45deg or a 12-12 pitch. How far through the roof does it need to extend? Its a forced, fan-fed fire so I shouldn't need to worry about drawing a draft.

General Discussion / Standby generators.
« on: May 11, 2011, 06:36:28 AM »
Do any of you have much experience with standby generators? I am thinking about a Kohler 14K propane model that would power most of the place when the power goes out. I have several Honda portable generators but dragging them out in the dark during a storm is getting less fun than it used to be.

General Discussion / Does the forum take a summer break?
« on: April 20, 2011, 10:41:17 AM »
It looks like in a week or so I'll shut the stove down until fall but I still need to cut a bunch of wood. Does this forum go dormant with the stoves over the summer, just curious as this is my first year here.

Portage & Main / P&M ML30 - First Impressions
« on: February 24, 2011, 08:57:39 AM »
On Feb 4th I fired up my new ML30 boiler, after figuring out why it was running hot (the damper was installed wrong) I am now fairly well happy with it. I have only been running 3 weeks so far and am quite pleased with how little wood it uses compared to what a neighbor with a Wood Doctor told me he uses. I will post again after I get more experience.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Portage & Main temperature recomendations
« on: February 07, 2011, 12:06:43 PM »
I am brand new to the outdoor boiler game and would like some advice. The factory default settings start the blower at 159 degrees and blow untill it hits 165. I see the temp then goes on up to closer to 170 before starting down. This seems a little cool to me but what do others recomend to run with?
