General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Firewood length

That's right where I cut larger pieces that need to be split- just so they fit into my TSC splitter. Anything 5" or smaller gets cut at about 27"-30".

Same here except I only split if its over 12" diameter.

Central Boiler / Re: CSL logs
« on: November 26, 2011, 06:27:14 AM »
Really? A CSL for an OWB?
I agree with MattyNH. A quick chimney fire once a week works wonders! My OWB stack is only 8' long and made from some galvanized oil burner stack that I got a bunch of for free. Been burning for 1 year and have replaced it 1 time(15 min job). Didn't really need to but I was getting rid of the disintegrated rain cap and it was just easier to put on a whole new stack then to fool with removing the cap. I have about ten more pieces of the free stuff so I should be good for 10 more years. ;D

Fired back up last week. Its nice to not hear the oil burner running. Fill 3x a week with scab wood. Life is good.

Mine is shut down right now because we have the windows open  As soon as the A/C fires up so does the OWB. Wth the small amount of wood I use for DHW its still a good savings over the fuel oil.

Wood Doctor / Re: Truth about Wood Doctor by president
« on: April 10, 2011, 05:44:02 PM »
I have no dog in this fight. I did, however, notice that your signature does not list any Wood Doctor Boiler.

I looked at the WD units and thought they looked decent but after reading all the bad reports on many different sites I chose a different product. I tjust seems to me that there is either some truth to the reports or a few people are really out to get the Wood Doctor.  :bag:

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: WOOD USAGE
« on: March 26, 2011, 08:50:23 AM »
I always bought and sold by the cord (4'x4'x8', 128 cu') so face cords and ricks confuse me. How do you know how much wood you are actually getting? Do you get a face cord of 18" wood for one price and a face cord of 24" wood for a different price? I guess I am just ignorant being a PA born and bred hick...
Back on topic, 1st year with the OWB. Fired in January. Have used maybe 4 full 128 cu' cords so far.

General Discussion / Re: AH FOR THE WOOD SHED

Power out here in South Central Pa for 8 hours. Don't have my own generator yet so I snagged one from work. Made up a cord set, ran it to the OWB and back fed the house. House warm, beer cold and movie on the tube! Invited the neighbor to come on over but they were going to tough it out. I then asked them to call me when the power came back on since I had the main tripped out on the panel so I didn't zap any linemen.
Gotta get a gen set up soon!

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Coal Experiment

Scott7m Do you have shaker grates in your setup?
I've had mt NCB-175 up and running since the 1st of Jan. and am getting 12-14 hour burn times easily. I would like to experiment with coal also. I'm in PA so anthracite coal is readily available and fairly inexpensive. A 24 hour burn time sounds nice!
