That's right where I cut larger pieces that need to be split- just so they fit into my TSC splitter. Anything 5" or smaller gets cut at about 27"-30".

My splitter will handle 24 inch pieces so that is about what I cut.

I cut pieces at about 30 inches because my firebox is 32 deep. I never split anything if it will go in the door 20x20.

Same here except I only split if its over 12" diameter.

I cut my firewoos at 21 to 22 inches long, that way I can get 5 rows under my wood shed.

MattyNH:  I cut mine to 24 inch.  It's easier to figure a cord that way plus it's the max length my splitter can handle.  I split it to 6 to 8 inch diameter.  I would have been hard pressed to get some of those 20 inch diameter logs through the door at 24 inches long.  I can feel my back giving out now just thinking about it.  Roger

I get some used 8' oak 3x5's from work, they get cut in thirds (32").  I cut trees to about the same length.  Since I only have a small electric splitter (18") I cut larger pieces shorter so I can lift them but they don't get split.  I haven't gotten into a tree greater than 18" diameter yet so while it may not be 'optimal' my goal isn't to treat the OWB to the best burning wood.  It is to heat the house at a reasonable cost ($ and labor).  While all us boys would like a bigger splitter ... I just can't justify one, like that has stopped me in the past ;)

Wood splitter only takes 25" max so i keep everything around 22'' whether i split or not. Makes it easier to get under splitter.

We'd cut them longer if they'd fit.  My firebox is only 40" deep.  Sometimes I cut them close to 45 and have to angle them in th box.
