Fire Wood / Re: December
« on: December 30, 2013, 06:22:17 PM »
I have been thinking the same. It's been dang cold here in Mn as well and my pile is sure going fast. I'm just hoping I can get to mid February with what I have stacked. Hopefully by that time the weather will be better and less snow to get to the woods and get more. It was seasonably warm here last Saturday and I felt like I better go try and add a little to the pile. Now were back in the freezer for awhile.   Stay warm everyone!!

Hardy / Re: Blower on H5 not working.

I do not believe it is a brush style motor.  I talked to the dealer and he talked about back pressure maybe being the culprit...  Not sure I totally understand how that works so I dunno...  I will more than likely order another blower just to have one in case something happens.  The vent hole the the blower blows thru was not plugged it just appears it got stuck or just quit working...  I'm going out of town again for just a night and my father in-law will be feeding the boiler while I'm gone.  I'm crossing my fingers that the blower continues to work..  It's been working fine for 4 days now...

Update for you all.  I was able to get the blower back up and running...  I think it just got a little caked with creosote and I cleaned it up a bit and re oiled it and so far so good...  It was -28 here this morning and the blower is sure getting a work out...

Hardy / Blower on H5 not working.
« on: December 20, 2013, 09:58:00 PM »
Hello. I was out of town for a couple of nights and my wife was feeding the boiler. Got home to check things out and noticed that the damper was pulled open and the blower was not on. I unplugged the power cord for the solenoid and blower and immediately the chain dropped from the solenoid and damper closed. Plugged it back in and damper opened back up and no blower. I stuck a screwdriver in and am able to turn the wheel sprocket thingy in the blower but it won't kick on. Any ideas?  It's only a little over a year old. Had been working fine up until for sure two days ago.  I oiled it this fall but maybe it didn't get it good enough...

My OWB is about 25-30 feet from my house.  Glad it's not any further cause digging 30ft of trench was killer...

That is crazy. I would maybe crawl out there with a climbing harness on.  Well, maybe not...

General Discussion / Re: Muck Boots

I have a pair of the Muck Chore boots and wear them all the time.  I live on a farm and they take a beating and get covered and chicken and cow poop all the time.  I don't dare wear them anywhere else cause I would be tracking stuff all over the place....  I do love them and they are worth the money...  My only complaint is they get a little HOT in the summer but when that time comes I usually switch over to something different....

I will 2nd the "open the door and wait 30 seconds" thing...  the other day I should have waited 35 seconds cause I singed my beard...  I smelled it right away and came into the house fully expecting to have no eyebrows and ended up the brows were fine but the hair on my chin was not...  Oh well, it was time for a beard trim anyway  ;)

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: It's cold out there
« on: December 12, 2013, 07:36:10 AM »
We had -26 for a few mornings recently here in MN.  I'm in N Central MN. A little warmer than swede but not much.  The wood pile has taken a pretty big hit that last 2 weeks...

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Automatic vent valves
« on: December 10, 2013, 08:48:35 AM »
I've been watching Dave's issue closely as I am having similair issues.  I can't seem to get any kind of consistant heat to my 2nd level.  I can only find 1 bleeder valve on my whole 2nd story.  I've bled the air and it still does not work.  It's almose like the valve is not opening to let water up thru the pipe.  It's been super cold here in MN and my 2nd level gets down to 60 degrees.  The entire main level works great and stays close to where the t stat is set unless its -20.  At that point there is a definite drop cause it can't keep up with my drafy old house...  I'm sure I have some major air in the 2nd level and I'm about ready to call a pro to have them bleed the entire system...  I'm right there with you Dave...  frustrating....

Hardy / Re: How much do you load?
« on: November 25, 2013, 12:57:02 PM »
I load mine twice a day and usually throw in 4-5 smaller rounds (20" long) and a couple larger ones on top.  That's a good 12 hour burn maybe a little longer...  I live in a very drafty old farm house.....  When we get into Jan and it's gets colder I throw in a little more just to make sure it does not go out.  I'm in Northern MN so it gets durn cold...

I have mine In a grove of super large white spruce trees 30 feet to the east of my house. The prevailing wind blows the smoke (most of the time) away from the house. When it's -20 outside I don't want to walk any further than I have too. The only downside is all the dry pine needles that drop from the trees. I end of raking all around down to the dirt just in case.  I feel better when there is snow on the ground  :) keep in mind that the occasional spark will fly!

Hardy / Re: Stack Temps
« on: November 13, 2013, 10:13:42 AM »
Hey Guys.  I've not measured my temps but am curious about the monster flame from other Hardy units.  I've used mine for a year and have yet to see any kind of flame out the top.  Are there models out there that do not have the plate on the top of the underside?  Don't mean to change the topic here just curious...

Hardy / Re: Coals falling through the grates
« on: November 06, 2013, 07:39:41 AM »
I find with mine that if I have too many coal up top that it does not get enough air flow when the fan kicks on.  Every once in awhile I have to rake the coal up top to get them to fall thru to the bottom so I can a better air flow to the logs.  I try and have a real nice coal bed on the bottom with enough up top to help fire the logs when it calls for heat.  This has worked so far.  I'm on my second year with an H5 and after year 1 I kind of found what works and does not work for mine.
