I enjoy all the things everyone has mentioned but the smell in the air when I walk outside is also something I look forward too.  When it's well below zero and I open that door and see the heat being made that is also a real nice feeling.

I just saw this and ordered one up!  Should have it next week sometime.  Still got a lot of wood to cut yet so I will put it to work.  Thanks guys for the info!!

I have a Hardy H-5 and I keep mine at 175.  When we hit -10 and lower I bump it up to 180 and nothing higher.  My low end is set at 155.

I did this last year too.  Different brand but same end result.  Not a good feeling to look over and see steam rolling out the top..  I happenend to be outside but out of sight and when I came back into sight something did not look right.  Ran over and saw my ash pan door wide open and I about hyperventillated...  I read somewhere to go inside and turn the hot water on in the house to take some of the demand..  Not sure if that was right but it seamed to help...  rather than fill her up with cold water right away.  I had only boiled off a little so there was still plenty inside.  Really hope I don't do that again...  EVER...

We built a pad from concrete block tht is two rows high. Works really well and makes it easier to clean out the ashes.  Have had it this way for 1 year and no issues.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Anyone else out cuttin wood?
« on: February 02, 2013, 01:18:07 PM »
Just curious if anyone else is out cutting wood today?  It's 7 degrees here in MN and its kind of nice out there. Unlike earlier in the season I don't come in dripping with sweat.  We just put the owb in last fall and I figured I had enough cut to get me into feb and here we are and it's time to cut more.  I suppose most of you owb vets are always a couple of years ahead... :)

I just googled "Ayuh" and now know what it means...  Never seen that before....

BTW, I like your homemade boiler!

In Northern MN we had -25 last night and will probably hit a high of -7 today.   This is my first year burning wood and am running a Hardy H5.  Put a few extra logs in but other than that I have not noticed a big jump in usage.  Days like this I am very pleased to be burning wood and not oil.  I am seeing my wood pile shrink but that's ok.  Stay warm everyone!

This is interesting. I have thought about this also but kind of dismissed it. I myself have gotten a face full of smoke on occasion but I try not to do that anymore. Stuff is certainly strong. Everyone in my house has been sick but I'm pretty sure that's more due to a cold or the flu or something.  Are people in your house having itchy eyes and runny noses or breathing issues?

I have an H-5 and everyday when it's real cold out I have an icicle on the lower right of the firebox door.  This happens everyday....  It's kind of yellow or orangish in color.  I end up just hitting it with my glove and knocking it off.   Is this what your talking about or is it actually inside the door on the little ledge?

Hardy / Re: Low temp/water indicator light ?

Thanks guys for the info.  I will keep an extra eye on the water level the next couple of days. It's supposed to be really cold here in mn with windchills at the -20 to -30 levels.

Hardy / Low temp/water indicator light ?
« on: December 23, 2012, 07:45:09 PM »
Not sure if all models have the red light on the side but mine keeps going on. I checked the water level and temp and it all seems fine. I talked to my dealer/installer guy the other night and he said the sensor is super touchy and it could be down a cup of water and trigger the indicator light.  Goes off- goes back on just kind of bugs me to see the light on. Anyone else have this happen?  Between this and trying to get my indoor registers hot on all floors it's kind of driving me crazy. Each damn day it's something different. I'm in a new house for me (old farm house with crappy windows) and just trying to get everything to work together in sync seems tough.

I just went and turned the aquastat on the oil boiler down to 140. That's as low as the dial will go. I don't totally understand how everything is supposed to work together but I'm getting there. I really have already learned a ton from this place.  I really appreciate everything.  This old house is new to me as is the owb so I realize there will be a learning curve to get everything to work in sync. When the owb was installed it did not come with a ton of info and most of the stuff appears to have to be tweaked.
