Wasn't the 289 the popular engine in its day? I think you can get a crate engine in like a 350 hp. Seems like that would give it some life and maybe a little nostalgia.

Some friends used to buy the Mustang II’s left and right, yank the four banger and drop a 302 in em, I made more than a few custom oil pans back in the day. You can get some surprising horsepower out of a 302, back then as well they were plentiful.

I guess I have just seen to much speed, bodies and foolishness over the years and would personally rather have original equipment that stands the test of time, that big 8 will get you there fast but the six banger was a hard one to kill and will get you there dependably, not to mention that once chopped up the value is gone forever.

Wife said no, but that hasn't stopped me before. I like all them older Ford motors, took two or three power cables to run the whole thing.
Had a 4.6 in my 96 Thunderbird, that went good when I got done with it.

I definitely would do the opposite. Heavy lead sled engines are no good. A brand new coyote 5.0 (302) are absolutely nuts and with a nice tasteful cam mild head work and headers that thing would easily turn out 500hp

I have a '69 Fastback with a 428 Super Cobra Jet, close ratio 4 speed, 4:11 Detroit Locker and power steering. That's the way Henry sold it and that is the way it will stay. Just a whole lot of fun to drive. Your car would be a lot of fun with a 390GT, they turn somewhere around 300 hp stock. A 289 with a few goodies would be fun too and that would be an easy swap. The stock 6 would be the easiest and keep the car original leaving you with the most value. Whatever you decide to do, Do what YOU want to do, it's your car. Have fun!
