Home Made / burn control
« on: January 28, 2013, 08:50:13 AM »
I have a home made wood boiler. its made of stainless steel. Its aprox. 8' tall with the fire box in the bottom and a 6" round stack that goes stright up through the middle and out of the top. there is no damper in the stack. the only wayi can control my draft is with the dial on the door. if i load the firebox up it will only last about 5 hours before it needs more wood. i am looking a way to slow the burn process and make my wood last longer. i have called duravent and they cant help me because i have a home made product. I was looking at the barometric damper but it would be about 8' to 10' above the fire box and i am not sure that it would help me. if anyone has any info that could help me please share. thanks

Just wanted to put this out there foe people. I have a single loop 10ft. High is my highest point. I have a bell and gossett pump. NRF-22. I am getting somewhere around 5 gal per min. So far it is working. My return line is warm so I am getting most of the heat out of my boiler. I am keeping my tank temp anywhere from 140 to 170.

Plumbing / water additives?

i have a home made outdoor wood boiler. non pressure. it is a very simple set up. i only heat my house with it. i bought the house and this is my first year using this heater. i used county water to fill it. it has somewhere around 400 gal. of water. the entire boiler is made of stainless. i have it plumed with 3/4 in. cpvc pipe with a little iron pipe near the boiler. i am using a bell and gossett pump. Is there anything i should add to the water? i am not worried about freezing due to the fact that i keep a fire burning. i have read that you should use a water softer in your system. i have no way to add one. i am just trying to make sure that i take care of my boiler so that the pluming will last a long time. i will try to add some pics of it soon.
