Home Made / Re: needing info in gassifer nozzle?
« on: April 11, 2015, 06:51:07 AM »
I don't want to hijack this thread but this is OT.

Does anyone have a diagram of the floor and nozzle area of a 250 or really detailed pictures?

To answer the OP I buy all of my firebrick at my local block/brick yard they charge me $1.65 for the 1-1/4 bricks.

And I made this
http://s737.photobucket.com/user/flaughs2000/media/Gassifer/IMG_8234_zpsinq3ra7i.jpg.html
with a 50/50 by volume mix of refractory cement and perlite there is 1/2" chicken wire in the middle of it also.
The "board" is 1-1/4 x 26 x 24 it weighs about 30Lbs I have about $80 into it 3 10Lb buckets of refractory cement and 1.5 small bags of perlite I have had this installed now for about 3 weeks in the ceiling of my primary burn chamber and still looks new.

Its right on the front door.

The old design
http://s737.photobucket.com/user/flaughs2000/media/Gassifer/Front%20blower_zpsi2o8g7fb.jpg.html

There is no slope on the blast tube going thru the door I built this design before before you suggested it I would have done that though it's a good idea I'm going give it a try as-is. If or when the butterfly gets gummed up I'll do some surgery on the door slope everything inward.

Regarding the actuator I can see spots on the circuit board for the end limit switch but my model does not have it so the blower will struggle thru the 15 seconds it takes to open.

The upper chamber the wood is loaded into is "pressurized" with a blower the rich in fuel smoke gas mixture is then pushed thru the nozzle where it is mixed with heated air and then it secondary burns at a high temp.

Thats my take on the process.

Did you find any posts about home made 250's I was not able to find any using the search?

I finished putting this together last night the flap using a solenoid did not get out of testing phase so I opted for a butterfly valve I tried the selonoid on the butterfly but it did not have enough power so i switched to the honneywell actuator it's slow but super powerful.

I keep getting "The upload folder is full. Please try a smaller file and/or contact an administrator." so back to PB

Home Made / Blower being affected by creosote
« on: March 31, 2015, 06:59:06 PM »
Hello everyone,

I've been working the bugs out of my gassifer build and one of them was chugging after some troubleshooting I found the issue to be lack of air so I bypassed the 6' of 2" pipe and 3 elbows and put the blower on the door.
I'm attempting to replicate this. http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx14/flaughs2000/Gassifer/What%20I%20copied_zps90lsdasg.jpg and that worked great, really clean burns the boiler starts the gasify in seconds but I was worried about the long term affects of the blower being part of the primary chamber with the way it was designed. I put the blower on the door Sunday and today the blower changed it's "tune" I found the blower full of a watery creosote and it ran thru the motor.

http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx14/flaughs2000/Gassifer/Inside%20front%20door_zpsgzf8go9t.jpg

My guess is the gasses are condensing in the cold blower housing the only thing I can think to do is but a sheet metal flap on the inside of the door hoping that the blower will blow it open and not get stuck.

Does anyone have any input?

Thanks

Sorry for the photobucket links but I cant get photos to attach here.

Interesting my wood is.

1 small originally cut and split for the indoor wood burner.

2 really dry. 7% dry it's been covered for 3 years.

I will try some  wood that was cut this past summer and has not been covered well.

Thanks for the info.

Home Made / Gasser chugging?
« on: March 26, 2015, 06:46:16 PM »
I'm working on the final tuning and adjustments to my gasser and I have a chugging situation it happens after a fresh load of wood or after start-up and before the wood starts turning into charcoal.
I need the primary air wide open on startup to get a secondary burn going but then to correct the chugging I need to cut back on the primary air.

Does anyone know what would cause this?

Ayuh,....    What sorta controls ya lookin' for,....

I used nothin' but aqua-stats, 'n my own wirin' for my boiler build,....

One controls the draft, 'n blower, when I turn the blower on,...
'n a 2nd runs the pumps,....

What happens to the blower when the fire goes out does it continue to run and chill the heat out of the water in the jacket?
I'm looking for a controller that stops the blower if the water temp does not rise during a set period of time and turn the blower off. This is a big deal especially since my boiler has over 300Gal of water in it.

I ordered this controller and it's scheduled for delivery today. http://www.dwyer-inst.com/Products/Product.cfm?Group_ID=20021#ordering

I was looking at your pictures and i didn't notice any smoke bypass. Almost all of these downdraft style boilers have a trap door smoke bypass in the top of the firebox for getting the fire started. How are you going to start the fire?? It looks like your welding is with a 110 volt wirefeed. You must be really pushing that welder, welding 1/4" steel? I see some of the welds are flux core wire. How much water do you think it will hold? What thickness are your 4" pipes? Keep up the good work!

Nope no smoke bypass I'm just let it roll out the front door I thought about adding one but I feel like I'm in deep now with the build and after watching some videos you load the wood in stuff some news paper in light it off close the door and turn on the blower and 5 Min later you got a fire.

I'm using a 110V 100Amp Lincoln weldpack running .035 and 75/25 gas the duty cycle is 20% and is a build killer you just need to plan what your doing weld until the cutout hits and then cut metal prep your next weld cleanup ect until you hear the cutout click back in and go back to welding.

The 1/4 firebox was welded with a Lincoln AC225 stick welder the MIG will weld 1/4 but it takes multiple passes and is slow but is very clean so i only used it on small parts doors latches and all of the 10awg water jacket parts. The AC 225 is also only a 20% welder just weld until it stinks and wait.

Pipes are 1/4" sch 40

I've filled it already to chase leaks and it holds 316 gallons.

Thanks for the complement going back to work on it.

One 6" pipe isn't going to give you much heat transfer. Your 3-4" pipes should provide more heat transfer. What is your reason for having the V tunnel panels removable?

I agree Dave is not as much convinced. I decided on the multiple pipes after watching a video on the portage and main 250 and this is what I came up with.

The removable V tunnel is this.

1 being able to do a complete teardown and cleanup.
2 me not being 100% confident in my welding if ther was a leak in the back it would be a real pain to get to and repair.
I thought about tacking it in but I was worried about the thermal expansion cracking the firebox at the welds.
Dave is worried about them warping and compromising and speratition between the primary and secondary burn chambers.

Yes I have modified 2 items.

1 the 3 runs of 4" steel pipe and the front clean-out and top door is my idea the plans call for one 6" pipe going straight up.

2 the plans call for the V tunnel panels and rear piece to be welded in I decided to make stops in the floor to hold the 1/4" panels in-place you can see the pictures of the stops in the floor but I have none of the V panels in-place yet.

Jeremy.flaugh do you have a build thread for your boiler? Where did you get the plans??? Do you have your boiler up and running? How has it been working for you?

Hello vpd66 I started a new topic so we don't hijack this thread.

I've been lurking around here for awhile now gathering info and I'm building a gassifer from plans I bought online.

Here is a slideshow of my build.
http://s737.photobucket.com/user/flaughs2000/slideshow/Gassifer

I'm wrapping the water jacket up now I'm really hoping to have it up in running for the end of the winter but it might be for spring and heating my hottub and pool this this summer.

I bought the plans from Dave at independenthomeenergy.com for $50

Here is some key youtube videos that Dave published.
