General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / My Setup
« on: March 12, 2014, 04:26:39 PM »
My set up consist of a Legend 4135 OWF, Carport, PJ 14 foot dump trailer, John Deere 310 Backhoe, Troy Built 27 ton log splitter, 2 - Husqvarna 455 chainsaws, 1 - Husqvarna 460 chainsaw, and a Kawasaki mule.  All of the equipment listed is also used on the farm for other purposes.  I have my own supply of wood and try to cut it three years in advance.  The smaller wood under the carport was cut for a indoor insert before I decided to go with a OWF.  Now I split it much larger as seen in the trailer.  I usually cut some wood in the fall and some in the spring and do it all by myself.  I usually burn 4 or so cords a winter, but this year I will likely burn 6 being it was about the coldest winter I remember.  This is my 3rd winter with the OWF.  I heat a 3500 sq ft house (70 - 72 during the day and 68 at night) and a 30 x 40 garage (when needed) and my hot water.  Should have bought one 20 years ago!!  :bash:

We need a new topic page - "Getting ready to buy a OWF"  Seems almost daily somebody is wanting info on OWF's.  If they could all be under one topic, everybody wouldn't have to repeat themselves on each Thread

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Aquastat
« on: November 04, 2013, 05:48:31 PM »
I'm on my 3rd year with a OWF.  I have always had my Aquastat set on 170 -180.  The way mine works is I set it on 180 and set it with a 10 degree difference which means it comes on at 170 and off at 180.  Went by it today and it was off but the temp was 185.  Just checked on it again and it was 185 and still running.  Set it back to cut off at 175 and it cut off.  Anyone have any ideas what may have happened.  It has worked fine until now.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Shut down OWF for the Season
« on: March 09, 2012, 11:50:21 AM »
This was the first winter with a OWF.  With spring coming, I should be shutting it down in the next 30 days or so.  I need ideas on the water.  Should I change it when I shut it down, leave it in until next fall or what?
All thoughts are appreciated.

Legend / Burn Time
« on: February 12, 2012, 06:36:37 PM »
Yesterday and last night were my coldest day and night since firing up my Legend.  I loaded it all the way up at 8pm last night with outside temp 31 degrees and a low last night of 22 degrees.  It didn't need filling again until 11am this morning. 15 hour burn time heating 3500 sq ft house.  70 degrees while we are sleeping and 74 when we are not sleeping.  Also heating my hot water.

Legend / Low wood usage
« on: January 14, 2012, 06:58:36 PM »
Amazed at the low wood usage on my Legend.  The coldest time of the year was last night and today. 27 last night.  I try to burn in 12 hr cycles and have not had to fill it all the way up yet.  I had a fireplace insert for four years and I believe it uses the same amount if not less wood than the insert did and my whole house stays warm plus my hot water.

I am getting ready to install a Maverick ET 732 Temperature Probe on my OWF.  Where would be the best place to install the probe on the pex line?  My pex comes out of the OWF, into the pump and 125 feet to the heat exchanger in my existing heating system and then back to the OWF.

Thanks
