General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Burning Chicken Litter
« on: December 24, 2011, 08:17:19 PM »
I have access to Chicken Litter (wood shavings and manure mixture)  I was wondering if anyone has burned this in a OWF.  I'm going to do some experimenting with it but some more info would be appreciated if you have tried it.

Thanks!

Yep - I have read these words on this site more than one time and now I see why.  I've had my new Legend going for about six weeks now. Been thur 30 - 70 degree day and nights and about to get the hang of it.  I've been putting enough wood in it to last 12 hours, but the last few times, I have put in enough to fill it every 24 hours. I really haven't seen much difference in performance or build up.  I've cut about 40 cords of wood this year from Hurricane Irene and plan on cuttin another 10 or so.  Hopefully I won't have to cut any for a few years.  I just hate to see it lay in the woods and rot.  I've had a insert for years and this OWF is so much easier!

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Solar Panel for Hot Water
« on: November 18, 2011, 11:18:35 AM »
I have a Legend.  Is anybody using a Solar Panel to heat/help heat the water in their OWF.  Or just using the Solar Panel in the summer time just to heat the hot water for the home.   If so, could you explain how this works and if it is economical.

Thanks

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Using Heat Exchanger for Air Conditon
« on: November 17, 2011, 08:34:15 AM »
I saw some talk about this under another heading, but wanted to bring it to this heading because more people seem to use it.
Would it be possible to install 1000 feet of pex 4 feet below the surface, fill with water/antifreeze, install pump and pump it thru the existing heat exchanger that we use for our Wood Furnace and cool the house in the summer time?  The ground is suppose to be about 55 degrees at this depth year round so the water inside the pex would cool before running thur the heat exchanger.
There was some discussion on sweating, but I'm sure you could install a drain for that.  It could be tied into the OWF using the same pump and water storage or used without the OWF.  Just buy the pex, pump and T-stat
This idea seems to be a great one and was wondering what you guys think.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Inside furnace temperature - Oven?
« on: November 15, 2011, 06:35:07 PM »
Does anybody have any idea what the inside temp of a wood furnace averages.  I know when the blower is on, it is hotter and when the blower is off, it is cooler.

I'm just wondering if I could wrap up a Boston Butt in foil and place it inside the wood furnace. ;)

I have done a "search" and found a few comments on water setting temperatures but wanted more info.
Was wondering if you would post your "on and off" settings and why you use these settings.
My Legend was preset at 180/170

Thanks

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Idea is working
« on: October 29, 2011, 02:29:30 PM »
On my new Legend, I installed a new light just like the one that came with the unit, only I added a red bulb.  I tied it into the fan motor so when the fan runs, the light comes on. That way  I can look out the window and see how often and how long the fan runs.  My unit is set at 180/170 degrees and today it was 45 degrees outside
and it took 10 minutes to raise the water temp 10 degrees.

Legend / Fired up my new Legend today
« on: October 27, 2011, 04:21:33 PM »
Thanks to all that helped with my questions.  I did a self install and all went great.  I did hook up the Hot water heater to my coil in the furnace.  I already had the lines run so I will give it a try.  If it doesn't work, I will do a exchanger at the hot water heater like some of you suggested.  When I fired it up, the water in the tank was 72 degrees.  50 minutes later, the water was 180 degrees.  I came inside the house and took my heat gun and checked all the vents.  Most were 95 - 105 degrees with a couple at 110.  I only ran it for a few minutes as it was 80 degrees here today.  Tonight is suppose to drop in the 40's and stay in the 50's for a couple of days.  I plan on getting some temp readings at the return line on the heat exchanger just to see what the drop will be and I also plan on posting some pics.   One thing I would like to add is a light (maybe red) that will come on when the fan is running just so when I look out the window, I will know if it is running or not.  Any add-on suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks again!

Fire Wood / Hurricane Irene Firewood
« on: October 25, 2011, 04:20:34 AM »
When Hurricane Irene came thur this summer, she dropped lots of nice oak trees.  Just wondering if I cut lots of firewood now and placed it under a shelter, how many years would it last?
