Cooking in my Central Boiler
« on: January 03, 2012, 12:35:30 PM »

Got the idea to use my Central Boiler 6048 to cook in.  Using a cast iron dutch oven, I have successfully prepared stews, chili, bread, and some desserts.  I refer to a dutch oven cookbook for recipes, then place the dutch oven in the corner of my boiler, with a few coals on the lid of the dutch oven, for even cooking.

I have noticed that traditional cooking times may be reduced slightly. I assume the boiler cooks more quickly than a traditional campfire with coals.   Does any one else use their oudoor wood furnace for cooking?

I bet the neighbors don't complain when they smell a good porterhouse in the wind.  That the way to get around local regs, "it's an outdoor oven officer, not a wood furnace".  Have yet to see an ordinance against a grill, ours is just bigger than most.

When we had an indoor wood add on furnace I used to cook hotdogs over the fire. It was great. Campfire wieners in the middle of winter and I never had to leave the house. Seems to me I wrapped something in foil and cooked it on the ledge once but I don't remember what it was.

I have a Hoss 300 HE and I cook often in mine. Last weekend barbequed chicken and baked potato. Great to cook beans, chili and stew. works great.

If all goes according to plan I will be heating the house, DHW, and clothes dryer. If I start cooking in it the electric company can kiss my ash.

One of my favorite restaurants has a wood fired oven. I only burn clean real wood. No trash. And if I were going to cook in it I would be selective about the wood I load. I like the grill too but its hard to make a pot of stew on the grill. I would probably build a small enough fire to ensure it calls for heat the entire time because that smoke does get a little nasty when it is starved for air. Hell I might just roast the Thanksgiving turkey in there with some oak and hickory.

I have no problem with a wood fired oven at a restaurant.. Its a open fire, totally different.. A wood oven fire doesn't have the creosote like the OWB..Creosote is so not good for you..Just google it..Why would you cook food in a OWB that is fill with it??..But hey more power to ya cooking that turkey in the OWB..Your a better man than me!

I have done baked potatos in mine, and by double wrapping in foil, I do not see any problems other than when you burry them in the hot ash, you have a terrible time finding them when you go back in to get them. Also if you prick them with a fork to check for doneness, it pokes the foil into the potato and its a pain in the ash to get the potato cleaned from the foil, but they do cook fast.

I tried to get the wife to let me smoke our turkey yesterday in mine.  To no avail!  Ended up smoking it in the grill smoker.  Turned out really good with the cherry wood.  Just a shame to let that giant smoker in the yard go to waste when it so available.
