General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: ThermoPex
« on: March 17, 2010, 07:39:59 PM »
We use Ecoflex from Uponor it is the best and easiest product we ever found.  It has five water barriers, so even if the old side casing is damaged on install, ground water will never reach the heat lines.  Ecoflex 1st choice, Urecon 2nd(short runs less then 25') or Dual PEX-Flex 3rd (good but very hard to work with 10 times longer the Ecoflex to put in).  With a small excavator you should be able to dig 100', place line, and back fill in a hour most of the time.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Portage and Main OWB

The brand name has been around for a long time, but has gone in and out of business.  The newest manufacturing company has only been making them for a few years.  He is also the only heatmor dealer I ever had to take a dealership away from.  In our 14yrs of distributing Heatmor we have only had 8 failures in all of western Canada, one was with one of his sales.  The customer tried dealing with Bryan for almost a year before they call Heatmor(either Heatmor nor Harris Custom new of the leak before that call) at which point we replace the furnace.  Bryan tried to sell them a portage at a discount as apposed to having the furnace replaced at NO cost.

Heatmor / Re: domestic hot water coil

Both the hot water coil(port) and oil burner(port) options must be ordered with the furnace they can not be added later.  The coil has a bracket it sits on in the water jacket.

The weldment is the firebox and water jacket(every thing that touches fire or water).  The ashpan is the fire brick and ashtub it's almost all under the sand.  I can't say what Heatmor will do every time just what they have done on the few times we have need warranty.  And that is that has been more cost effictive to replace the whole unit.  When a Heatmor goes down they and we want it back up and running as fast as possible this has ment, replace the unit asap.  To build a weldment or ashpan and ship it would take to long.  There were No Charges to the customer.  Now there are parts that can be replace the inner door, fans, firebrick, bladder, aqustats or fire grates.  A Heatmor is very easy to work on, if the custom wants a service call for these part there could be charges.  For us  to go say 500km to change an aqustat yes I would charge for the trip but we run Western Canada, some dealer with a smaller area may or may not charge for that.  A customer that has never change an aqustat before should be able to change it in less the 15min.  Heatmor has what I would say is by far the best warranty of any outdoor wood furnace this is the main reason we took on the brand 13yrs ago.  The first 5yrs is a 100% covered on the weldment and ashpan and after that it is prorated.  But I must point out that in 13yrs we have only had 9 units fail in all of western Canada.  I've had one pump and one aqustat go on my unit at home in the last 7 yrs and 1 pump go on the unit at the office in 13yrs.

No you don't have too, I don't.  But it would stop any water from becoming stagnate, but the only Heatmor to fail do to corrosion the water was high in sodium to the point the customer does not drink their water taste too salty and they didn't put the additive in the water.  So when Heatmor gave them a new unit we asked them to use clean water and to put the additive in.

With Heatmor being all 10 gauge 409 stainless steel it should not be a problem.  Plus the the feed line is at the bottom of the unit and return at the top to stop any thermal layering or stagnate water pockets.  The failure we have had all happen in the first two years of running their units and Heatmor via us has replace each on site.  The Warrenty cover corrosion and you can leave the pumps running in the summer if you like, they take very little power for the most part.

Heatmor / Re: New Heatmor Owner

We are the Distributer for Heatmor in Western Canada you can sort in the cycle by turning up the low limt on the aqustat if you need to but dry wood should fix it.  The restrictor will be on the unit now if you burn alot of coal you can take off.  If want to start with coal, burn wood and add coal on top the first day.
