Plumbing / Re: plumbing my owb

Let me tell ya, I am a licensed plumber/hvac/r guy and have been slow to try new things over the years. Took me a while to take to pex and crimping, but its the only way to plumb a project. Having just plumbed my outdoor boiler, I'm all for the sharkbite, Man, what a time saver.. AND EASY! Only way to go for a boiler install. I personally used 1" pex 150' house to boiler and 1" 50' TO SHOP. The way I see it, my pumps are constantly on, so when stat calls for heat, blower kicks on. I wouldn't downsize or split the lines. Shorter run could take a smaller pump if you stay with 1". My .02

I personally passed on this unit because of the catilyst system. In the past, I had heard many stories about them in the woodstoves. Other than that, I was really impressed with the unit.

Plumbing / Re: WATER-TO-WATER
« on: August 17, 2010, 07:06:22 PM »Side arms can also become clogged although normally not as quickly. I have used both a side arm and a flat plate with my furnace. I have also installed furnaces for a number of years. The only time I would go with a side arm is if you use very little hot water. The problem I ran into with my side arm was when we started using a lot of hot water we had to stop and wait for the tank to reheat. The main problem I have encountered with flat plates is when folks have limestone in the water. I have customers who flush the flat plate 6 or 8 times a year to keep the water flowing properly.Don't you have to stop and wait for water heater to catch up if you wasn't hooked to the boiler anyway.

General Discussion / Re: OWB/KEEPING IT RUNNING AFTER LOST ELECTRIC
« on: August 17, 2010, 08:56:16 AM »With my OWB i use the hot water basboards so basically all i have to run is a 60 watt pump.my OWB is natural draft so powering a blower is not a concern.I just need enough power for the damper solenoid and pump.I am currently installing my OWB and plan to use a solar backup on the pump. How long will yours run on battery. Do you have a diagram of your setup? Thanks
I can run my stove with a couple of 12v deep cycle batteries and a small invertor.I recently purchase a couple of small solar panels to charge the batteries.Luckily for me in my area power outages are a very rare and generally last only a few hours
