General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / STUMP BURNER
« on: March 29, 2013, 10:19:25 PM »
OK... GUYS DONT LAUGH ME OUT OF HERE.. BUT HEAR ME OUT

WE CLEARED ABOUT 4-5 ACRES OF TIMBER OUT WHERE A NEW HOME WAS BUILT.  WE HAVE STUMPS THAT HAVE BEEN SITING FOR 2-3 YEARS.. ALL THE DIRT HAS BEEN SHAKEN OUT OF THEM.  BUT STILL SOME MASSIVE HUNKS OF WOOD.

IM THINKING OF BUILDING A OWB " STUMP BURNER "

IM THINKING A FIRE BOX OF ABOUT 8' x 8'

1) HOW MUCH DO YOU GUYS THINK WATER JACKET WOULD NEED TO BE?

WAS PLANNING ON BUILDING A CONV. STYLE UNIT FORCED AIR

AM I OFF MY ROCKER GUYS?

I GOT AROUND 55 STUMPS AND TREES WERE 3FT  TO 4 FT AROUND

I KNOW IT MAY NOT BE COST EFFECTIVE IF I DID BUILD IT... BUT SURE WOULD BE FUN TO MAKE ONE.  I DID SEE A POST ON HERE OF A GUY THAT BUIILT ONE THAT WOULD HOLD A 1500 LARGE ROUND BALE.

:) THAT WOULD BE BIGGER THAN WHAT IM THINKING.  BUT HE SAID HE COULD GO 3 WEEKS ON A FILL....  I WOULD LIKE TO GET A MONTH ON A FILL( OR A STUMP OR TWO!!!  LOL
LET ME KNOW YOUR THOUGHTS... OR IF YOU WANNA KNOCK SOME SENSE INTO ME' :o

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Empyre questions
« on: March 21, 2013, 11:03:41 PM »
Ok guys.. need your input or ideas.

Yesterday couldnt get stove over 150.. and it ended up being my 6"stove pipe had a hole the size of my finger left in  the very top.  It is at 17 ft high.  I have stove inside a building and needed that height to get over my peak.

Anyways. It was only the top 1 inch of pipe, besides that the rest of the pipe was perfect clean..

So my question is have any of you guys had this same issue and if so what did you do besides clean it?

Was wondering is i added a 12" piece of single wall at the top?  Its double wall pipe, jsut thinking it might be cooling off and causing build up.

I have no rain cap on on it so there is no restriction there.  But again it was ONLY the top inch...but it was quite  a sight seeing and 1/2" hole left in a 6" pipe..

Throw your ideas guys....

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / wood consumtion questions????
« on: December 11, 2012, 04:09:11 PM »
Ok so last night i cleaned ashes out of stove and loaded up like normal.  It was 15 degrees out last night ,  I left house thermostat at 75 and garage at 70.  Just like I normally do,  went out this morning and i could only get one small 3 inch round in stove,  I was very suprised.  I have seen post about pulling the coals forward when loading.... do you guys think due to the fact i had no coals under the wood that it likely burned feom the top down rather than bottom up?

.. and purtting one big log to one side or the other

I would like to see what others stories how they load there stoves and how much wood each of you put in at night.  Still learning everyday with the stove.. but this morning i was very impressed with the little wood it burned with it being so cold out.  Let me know your thoughts  :)

Also looking for a Stihl  MS880 Guys..... anyone got one for sale...  Love my MS660 but want more power..... and yes i have some HUGE logs im cutting...

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / better draft ideas?
« on: December 08, 2012, 06:14:42 PM »
Guys,  got a question about improving my draft on my Empyre.  Has no draft issues while burning or sitting idle,  just that when I open door and load wood, i wish there wasnt so much smoke coming out, Empyre talks about a smoke curtin od something to that effect.  Just wondering.  I do have 9 ft of chiminy on unit as it sits inside a building. . Im about 3 ft short of my peak,  im wondering if i would add on that other 3 ft if it would help my draft when i open the door,  or is it possbly too high already?  Could stack be cooling off to much?  But on other hand i had same issue when it was outside and only 6 ft of stck on it.  Just need some ideas what i could do to improve.  Thanks all

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / external water storage
« on: September 28, 2012, 08:08:27 PM »
Guys what are your thoughts if i would put like a 300 gallon very well insulated tank next to my stove( which inside now in a old building with my 75 loads of wood next to it)  anyways if i would put the tank there and spray foam insulate tank like 6-8 thick.  then use my one port on empyre to pump water through tank and circulate it back into stove.  would give me 500 gallons capacity of 180 degree water.. do you think it would work?

Plumbing / new pumps
« on: September 22, 2012, 04:46:49 AM »
guys,  just added (2) pumps to my empyre system.  I stacked two gunderfous 26-99 pumps, feeding out of furnace with 1 1/4, then pex is 1".  Running 110ft to house .  I can tell you this, its amazing how quick recovery is with furnace and heat exchanger for DHW.  I think the wood usage has cut in half... Its amaxing getting that return water back there faster and taking less heat of of return... makes a huge diffirence.  VERY HAPPY with results .  Can run furncae and take showers and i only see maybe a 10 degree drop in return water temp. Boiler temp normally doesnt even drop.  Guess stacking these two pumps is the ticket..    opinions????

Plumbing / INSULATED PEX
« on: May 02, 2012, 06:39:27 PM »
Guys looking for a fair price on 150ft of insulated pex?  Im needing it in the next 2 weeks and located in NE Iowa.  Im willing to drive to get what I need.  Unit was installed last winter only 30ft from garage, worrking great with little heat loss,  I basically just made my own and put inside 4 inch sewr pipe.  But im afraid if i go more than 30 ft im going to drop more than the 1 degree loss I have now.  Put your sales hats on guys I need pex ASAP ((((1" is size i need))))))

 :)
Thanks Matt

Plumbing / HELP??? Looking for help 20 Plate DHW install
« on: January 31, 2012, 05:02:54 PM »
Hello everyone,  I been reading lots of post here and looking for more info on hooking up my new " 20 " Plate for my DHW.  I have a Empyre 250,  heating my garage and my house,  i have 1" pex for main feed going to basement,  then I put t fittings in the main line to heat my garage.

First question is:  Can i use T fittings again in my basement to go to the plate exchanger?  the t's will be in the line before it gets to my furnace coil..
Socond:  seen alot of disscussion on before or after the hot water heater..  Would my 20 plate be big enough to use as a "ON DEMAND" heater,  or should i put it before and let the warm water stay stored in the water heater?

I would think if it had the capacity that it may work good after the DWH,  plus if need be could a guy turn on DWH and if fire went out or have to be gone it would slightly keep boiler water above freezing?

My main concern is using "T" fittings of main feed line and not taking too much away from coil...  right now as it sits garage and house work great and i have more than enough capacity with OWB.  Im amazed at how little wood this unit uses.

I would appreciate any help i could get....  diagrams and pictures are good too.  Im very new to this all so please be descriptive as you can

Thanks
