What is it?
« on: February 21, 2013, 08:03:34 PM »

For you tree experts what kind of wood is this, not to hard makes alot of fine ash when it burns, and dust when its cut.  Most of the tops I have to cut is this stuff, just wondering what it is wish it burned longer :(.

Its cherry wood.  I've got it all over my property and I live in Michigan.  Burns great after a year of curing.  I also make furnature out of it.

It looks like what we call wild or Black Cherry. Great for for smoking chicken or pork like apple.

Doesn't look like the other cherry I've cut, lighter and lacks the red tint, but could be.  Would tops from logging 3 years ago deteriorate that much, if its cherry?

Looks like cherry to me. Yes three year old cherry tops would have some rot. The heart of a big log would still be good but the small stuff can go quick.
