Sorry to hear about your fire, glad it wasn't from welding!
I like your concept. Will you be able to constant fire or will it be more of a batch heater? You know we "need" pics! LOL
I like the idea of a Garn, lot's of storage and only fire once a day or so.

Thanks guys, that's what I'm thinking, cheap and close to home.

Wood Doctor / Older wood doctor questions

I know, I know, they have a bad reputation but let's leave that aside for now please.
I stumbled across one that is about 10 years old, I think it's around 225k btu
Do they have round firebox's? Are the older ones as problematic as the newer ones?
It has been repair'd by a certified welder and the owner assures me it is leak free, he replaced it with a new gassifier (I'm not sure of the brand, green maybe?)
anyway, I was just wondering if it's even worth bothering with, it's close to home, cheap and if it has a round firebox I'm thinking I can modify it a little to make it more efficient.
thanks,
dave

I picked up a 4.5' piece of 6" well casing for my horizontal stack, I will get another piece for the vertical when the time comes. The well driller gave it to me and told me to come back when I know what else I need. :) I send him well work whenever I have a customer that needs a well.
Now I am searching for a tank for the firebox, I picked up a propane tank but I think it's diameter is too large, I'm afraid it won't leave enough room on the sides and it may boil in those two areas.
the "plan" is to use a 275 gal oil tank for the water jacket and insert a firebox from the end. The lp tank I have is 24 3/8" across and the fuel tank is only about 26-27". Now I'm thinking I would like a 60 gal or so compressor tank, or find two different tanks. The lp tank is a short stubby thing, I think it holds about 48 gals. By the time I cut it for the door I would only have about 24" for logs, I would like it to be longer.
thanks,
dave

For those who have built their own owb and used the exhaust pipe down into the firebox idea, did you find a forced draft necessary?
I'm doing the tank in tank method and I am going to go through the rear with the smoke stack and I don't want to lose all of my heat or use unnecessary amounts of wood. My original thought was to extend the smoke stack down to within about 6" of the bottom of firebox but now I'm thinking just keep it high and use a baffle. Any help and advice is gladly accepted.
My house is a walk out basement (which is finished) ranch about 900 sf per floor, good windows and well insulated, so I won't need a huge unit.
thanks,
dave

Inquiring minds want to know! How are things going? I'm going to do something similar shortly.

If I was to try and use a 275 gal oil tank I would make that the firebox and use the water heater as the vessel after all it's already a sealed unit and the oil tank is not.
I actually started one once this way and ended up scrapping the whole thing. If I was to do it again I would make the water tank slide in with some sort of gasket instead of trying to weld it in (it took forever!).
The only other thing I see is the thinness of the tank, it may burn through prematurely.
Good luck

I was going to go with a 30 gal. or so, an old water heater tank. You may be able to do the same secondary burn with a long baffle under the tank and an air tube?

I had one drawn up that I was going to build before they banned them around here. I was going to have the lower half of the tank sit right in the fire so to speak. Then it was going to be circulated to a storage tank of maybe 1-2 k gallons. Masonry built up over and then insulated. If you look into some of the newer gassifiers they require lots of storage. My thought is to burn hard until storage is up to temp and then let the fire simmer/go out until needed again. I'm guessing there would be a learning curve and things would have to be adjusted as the weather cools and warms changing the heat load.
good luck,
dave
