I would have returned the splitter and got another. Then if I broke it again, my money back.

Haven't looked at gatorbite, but next time at lowes, I will look. Looking will not tell me squat about the o-rings, but it will reveal how comparable they are to  what I know works. The watts ones don't have all the little "fingers" to grab the pipe like the sharks. Watts are chinese, oh yeah-----------and they LEAK!

I would venture to say that most of us do not look at wood cutting as work...................It's therapy!!!LOL!!! Kids might argue, but they are out voted.

Update. When I pulled one of the leakers off of a copper stub from my sidearm, definately had o-ring print, emery tape to get it off. Pretty darn confident that the o-rings failed and are being eaten by the chemical.

Most were watts  brand fittings from Menards. I had normally used all crimp fittings for plumbing work. Really don't know why I felt the need to deviate. Anyway, shop is now crimped, and house is all sharkbite. Probite looks to be the same as sharkbite to me also. Upon further inspection of the watts fittings, I did notice what I assume is etching of the plastic reinforcing inserts for the PEX lines. All along the only conclusion I could come up with as a cause for the leaks, was the possibility that the watts fittings were not compatible with the chemicals in the system. I dunno for sure, but that's the way it appears anyway. Jackel, It was a long time for me to be convinced as to the merits of using pex in plumbing work until I did my first job with it. Haven't looked back since. I still solder my share, but usually for repair, or when I need a hard connection.

How about this one: My son(now 13) was helping me on a roof 9yrs old. He had been "helping" since 7. But this particular day he was carrying shingles to me/ sliding to me and a passerby yells up to me"what's that kid on that roof for, you ought to be turned in for child abuse!" Needless to say , I told them to do whatever they felt was prudent and if teaching my kid a trade, work ethic, and how to work safely was  a crime.............I am guilty! I also asked what her kids were doing at the moment, she couldn't tell me. Our household has very little "downtime". He has baseball, football, basketball, bees, chickens, and helps dad. Kid had no choice but to learn how to work.

Word to the wise: Don't use anything other than Sharkbite brand fittings if going this route. Every off brand fitting I used leaked upon fire up this year. Luckily, most were in shop. Do have a few in house, but that will be remedied today. Looking at the construction differences, between the 2, I see why. The Sharkbites grab onto the pipe with more "fingers" is my first observation, and overall the fit seems tighter.

Awoke to a few inches of heavy white stuff this a.m. What a shock! Guess, I better feed the boiler. Hope my new fittings arrive today to fix my leaks. Nov. 9th. Not too bad, I guess.

And yet another... I'm starting to feel like maybe I should contact a publisher.... ^-^

Not the first time its crossed my mind either.....
Sorry, but book has been done. Most HVAC/refrigeration student learns  these calcs. early on. That and probably alot of computer programs already written to do the calcs for you. Good job absorbing the info though. As I get older, I remember the single most important thing my instructors instilled in my brain FOREVER, "K.I.S.S." The simpler, the better.

I really don't understand the fuss about heating the water and storing in tank. Any heat "loss" is "lost" inside the house to help heat it anyway. I use a sidearm and no complaints here.

Plumbing / Re: Controlling / compensating for lateral pex movement ?
« on: November 01, 2011, 08:19:38 PM »
In my set-up. pex has room to move, due to sharkbite 90's. After pex comes thru wall, it goes up to and across through floor trusses to mech. room, down thru side arm, then up through heat exchanger, and back out. Mine does move, but doesn't seem to be a problem.

Nice post RSI...

Plumbing pipe and fitting sizes can be very confusing. especially to people that don't deal with it on a daily basis....

I deal with them everyday, and there are things that can still be confusing sometimes....
