Kill-a-watt meters are only around $20-$30. If you have a Menards near you, I know they stock them. Otherwise your local library or power company might have free loaners available.

It has been a while since I checked freezer power usage but we used to have one that was made in the 80's and one that was made in the 90's. The one from the 80's was using 3 times as much power as the newer one. I can't remember the numbers for sure but I am thinking is was around $60 per year for the newer one and $180 per year for the older one.

Granted the older freezers use twice as much current, but  run half as long. When we kill a critter and put it in the freezer it takes days for it to freeze completely. Hydro likes a smooth load, not one that bumps and stops
