taco cartridge pumps and their life
« on: September 08, 2011, 02:47:48 PM »

i sent a question to taco on the subject of running thei cartridge pumps 24/7 or shutting them on and off with the furnace blower, their response is below (this is a cut and paste and is word for word their response)

From: Timothy Doran
Message: Good Morning, On certain motor designs start and stop operations may shorten the life of the unit because the start switch and/or start windings will wear out. Cartridge circulators do not have start swithes or start windings and therefore do not see these issues. I have seen our 00-series circulators run for many years in either application.

This will be the 6th. season for the 011 on our OWB, it has run 24/7 for the last 5 heating seasons. From late Sept. until the end of May with no problems to this date. I do however run the pump several times througout the summer for several hours to keep it from binding up, I don't know if it helps but it doesn't seem to hurt.

I have my taco 007 on a timer. Two hours a night during the summer months.

I  like that idea of putting the pump on a timer, so it runs for a while every day. I don't know if it would help the pump but it seems to me that it can't hurt for the pump to run a bit and circulate the water around in your whole system. Insted of just letting everything set for 3 to 5 months.

My first 011 lasted 1 1/2 seasons.  I am on my third year on the replacement cartridge now.  Not sure what happened.  I run it 24/7 when heating and not at all in summer.

My 0011 got noisy in less than one season. I personally don't like Taco and will never buy a new one again. Grundfos are much nicer.
I think I will try a permanently lubricated pump next time though. Either a B&G PL36 or an Armstrong E9.
From what I have read, they use a lot less power and last longer so I want to find out if it is true.

I've yet to try a taco, I've been using the nc pumps, then I've been using wasser and the HD revolution pump from pinnacle supply

I did install an Armstrong e9 last year, looks super

The NC and Wasser pumps are Grundfos knockoffs. I would use either of them before a Taco.
If a Taco knockoff exists, I have never seen it.
