FIREWOOD USAGE
« on: April 19, 2010, 08:36:02 AM »

Curious about wood usage. I live in Maine and have a two story 2800 sq foot house plus a 600 square foot garage plus hot water and I began burning in December 2009 and will end in the next two weeks and I have used about 4 1/2 to 5 cords of split hardwood. just about 1 and 1/3 cord per month. I am happy with that. I have an Aspen 175.

in my opinion you have a very good system with the amount or wood you have burnt. i live in ontario canada but i believe our temps are about the same on average (i may get more winter winds of the lake?)  i burn from october to april  or may and burn (dependingn on the year) 10 to 12 cords (4x4x8)  this year being a ten cord year

i have a bit of a leaky 2 story century old farm house (reinsulated where ever i have been able too) domestic hot water and keep my 30 x 40 shed above freezing for my dog to sleep in

i am thinking i can get dow to 8 cords with a little more work on the insulation and windows but that wont be until i can save teh money to do the job...cutting wood seems easier ;D

I really think it would be a lot more useful it you post what you used to use to heat and the usage along with your wood usage.

Such as
Example
I used to use 4800 therms of Natural gas and replaced that with 28 cord of wood.

This help people understand what they really replaced.

I use about 9 cords of wood (late Oct to late April) to heat a 100 year old farmhouse and a 700 sq foot garage in central Ontario. Prior to the OWB I went through about 3500 liters of fuel oil per year.
