Title: Shutting Down
Post by: Bud Man on March 30, 2016, 11:58:58 AM
With temps in the 50's,60's and a few 70's it's time to stop burning for the season. Going to miss "feeding the beast". Will burn it out, let it cool a couple of days then load it up with cardboard and burn it hot to burn out the creosote. Clean it up good, pull a water sample and forget it until October.

Yup, this will probably be the last weekend for me too. Highs around 40 and low's in the 20's for the weekend and then shooting up after that.

I figure here in West Michigan I have at least two more weeks.  Limiting the wood each morning and night.  No need to load more wood than needed.  Looks like we are headed for colder weather next week.  I'm hoping we break out after this and can shut down mid april

I figure I can shut down in a couple of weeks too.  The temps today are supposed to hit the upper 60's with a cool down through the weekend; temps in the 30's into early next week.  After that I do not know what the temps will do.  If it looks like it's going to warm up I just may shut down early.  Then the job I hate the most; cleaning her out for the down season.  It takes awhile and some effort to scrape all the seams of creosote.  I'll have to split up the work over a couple of days due to a shoulder injury.  Roger

My rule of thumb for wood furnace:  Start it up at the start of moose season.....Shut her down at the start of Turkey season

Well the weatherman changed his mind again and now the temps this week are staying cooler than predicted. Guess we'll keep it going until he changes his mind again. Wish I only had to be right half of the time.

I only see one night in the next week when it will climb to 0C. A few -18C , even the days are in the single digits. Gonna be a while before ours is shut down. My  tenant is still stuffing half a face cord into it every two days. They like to keep the thermostat set at 24C and I often go over just to get warm....(my wife likes 18C)

Most folks are still burning around here. Lows from the teens to high 20's and highs 30's to 40's. Snowed yesterday, almost a white out for a while but the Spring Peepers were still singing, hardy little creatures. Don't forget to throw a bucket over the chimney when you shut down for the season.

Peepers are wild/cool here.
But not for a couple of more weeks.
I'll post a video of them peepin, from  the wetland behind our house.

:post: That would be great. They will really get going in May when it warms up. One of the best parts of spring for me.

not shutting it down yet in Northeast Ohio.  We had a level one travel advisory over night into this morning.  Blizzard conditions at times.  Coldest April I can remember.  Still firing my furnace.

Cleaned the G400 out today, a lot easier than ole smokey it replaced. Five gallon bucket on the stack, and have the waste oil boiler running in the shop tonight to her the water, got close to 70 today but still pretty nippy at night.

10/19/2015 - 5/23/2016.  Finally shut her down.  May fire her up again if it gets cool out just to burn some junk wood and brush but it only flows to the water heater and bypasses the furnace.  So can still use A/C.
