I think 400 gal. will work out great for you. My legend boiler holds 500 gal. and that seems to be great , you can run out of wood and the water will keep heating for along time!!! I think gallonage is the key.

I'm still burning. I have some 5 year old wood that needs to be burned but I don't have to much left. My furnace has some black creosote on the walls now and I'm burning some really old oak wood.
I have a friend that has some pine that he wants to give me that is 2 years old to burn this summer. Will that really make my furnace a mess inside?  Or won't it be much worse??  I don't know if I want to think about cleaning it up after I'm finished burning the pine.

I have the 6180. It holds 500 gallons of water and I do burn right on the metal. I guess you could put fire brick on the bottom. I never really thought about it. It didn't come with the fire brick but I think you could purchase it and lay it on the bottom. The 6180 doesn't have a grate or an ash pan. They do have a model that does have a shaker grate and an ash pan and you can burn wood or coal in it. But it was quite a bit more money.

I have a Legend and really like it!!! It has been very efficient for me. I started burning it on the 1st of Nov. and am still currently burning just for dhw or if it gets down in the 30's I'll turn my bypass off and let the water go through my furnace coil and heat the house up. That furnace bypass is a very good extra feature that everyone should have. I went through about 7 cords of wood so far.  We are heating 3600sq.ft. of house including basement and 1200sq. ft. of garage with 12ft. ceilings set at 60 degrees. We heat 2- 50 gal. hot water heaters and also have the water lines ran to our hot tub but haven't had the courage to tie into it. I sure don't want to screw it up. I haven't had problems at all with the Legend. I bought mine through the Midwest distributor.  He is out of Minnesota and has been great to work with.  Everything he promised has been fulfilled and very quickly and efficiently,. I have been very happy with him!!!!  The Legend has passed the energy efficiency test and qualifies for up to a $1500 tax credit also. I was told it qualified at 77%. It smokes very little, mostly after refilling.
I am truly very happy with it so far and that could change next year although I hope it doesn't!!!
And just for the record I am not a dealer. My goal is to run it till May 1.

Whipny- You guys in the Home Made are so talented and fortunate!!! You can save yourselves alot of money, and we can learn alot from you.  I wish I was so talented.  I was hoping that I didn't step out of bounds by asking you that. I didn't really think about it until after I asked.
I had a Burns Best outdoor corn boiler and they went out of business 4 months after I bought it, so there went my warranty and my sanity. It lasted about 3 heating seasons.  I put so much money into it, it just wasn't worth it anymore. So I still had all the plumbing in place from the corn boiler so we decided to go with the wood boiler and it has been a great decision so far.   So much simpler.
I have a friend who has the Superior furnace out of Michigan, he has had it for quite some time also.  He likes it alot. It serves his purpose, but he doesn't heat his water or his shop of course.
When I bought my corn boiler you could buy corn for around 2-2.50 a bu. that wasn't so bad, but that didn't last either, so I'm happy with my decision to go to wood.

It looks as though you did a great job building this boiler and it sounds like it is working really good also!  Do you have an idea of how much time  and expense you have in building it ?  It looks as though  you have been a corn burner in the past.  I have been that route also. I had a outdoor corn boiler, not a real good experience.
So Congradulations on a job well done!!!!

not when it has 500 gallon of water surronding it, you can fill it with wood and it doesn't hardly drop any temperature at all.

The Legend that I have has a 28x30in. door. I don't think I could lift the piece of wood if it wouldn't fit, and the firebox is 40in. deep. All of the different size Legends have the same size door just the firebox depth is different.

I have a Legend Outdoor Wood Boiler and really like it!!!   Anyone else have a Legend?  If so maybe could suggest a site for it, or maybe a site for Legend/Taylor together.
