For Sale / Wireless Remote Thermometer. Boiler Monitor

Monitor your boiler from the house.  I had bought this and never did end up using it.  $40 shipped

A few years ago after I got my boiler all figured out I then hooked up a brazed plate to heat my house water.  Before doing this I could go for most of the winter on just loading once a day.  After heating our water my wood usage has doubled.  Does this sound about right?  We have a rather large family of 7.  I'm thinking I'm going to do away with it cause I'm not sure doubling the wood supply is gonna work.

Plumbing / Sizing Plate Exchanger??
« on: November 22, 2013, 06:54:02 AM »
Before installing my plate exchanger for the DHW I would only have to fill the boiler once a day on a really cold day.  I aquired a new ( looks like a 15 plate 1" inlets) plate exchanger from a buddy that didnt want to mess with it, and now I'm filling it twice a day on a mild day(40-50's).  Will switching it out with maybe a 30 plate do any better?  Currently we have endless amout of hot water with 5 kids but cant believe how much a load it changed.

Shaver Furnace / Ash Pan Latch Broke
« on: April 30, 2013, 06:07:06 AM »
Stove has been workin good all Winter but went out Sunday to find water all over the concrete.  I thought for sure it had sprung another leak but come to find out it boiled over due to the latch thats welded to the stove had broke off.  Lasted 3 years.  And you can tell where they tried to weld it and kind of missed the part that needed welded.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Fan forced vs. draft induction
« on: January 22, 2013, 01:56:17 PM »
So I did a little experiment by shutting down the fan and then leaving the ash door open about 3-4".  Such a better fire than with the fan. Chimney got really hot!  My air comes from under the fire.  Be nice if I could modify it to work with draft.

I've got a short run of pipe (40') that runs to my shop and it doesn't melt the snow around the black pipe that comes out of the ground to go inside, but the run that goes to the house (75') is melting snow at its deepest spot (around 3.5').  I've got the pipe that is wrapped about 3-4 times with that foil insulation inside a 4" pipe.  I'm sure this is not helping at all but any idea how much heat I could be loosing from this?  This whole boiler thing from the beginning has been a disaster and a money pit.  This wouldn't be that big of a deal if I hadn't gone through all the trouble with Shaver.  I really dont see how they are still in business.  So whats the best pipe to get?

Plumbing / Installed new Plate exchanger and have questions
« on: October 08, 2012, 10:53:53 PM »
I installed this on the cold side of the water heater and was gonna just leave the pilot on incase the boiler would cool off sometime and I wouldn't have the wife throwing a fit.  I also thought I would have a problem with the water being to hot.  Well the water doesn't seem that hot and really not that different than before.  And after I take a shower the burner is fired up on the water heater.  Not sure whats the problem.  I couldn't imagine if I turned the pilot off.  The boiler comes in on the bottom left and out the top above it.  The house water comes in from the bottom as well and into the water heater on the cold side.

Finally about to get my boiler all fixed from the crappy work of Shaver.  I want to put the best of the best chemicals in it but dont know what that is.  Would be nice to find something that would put a coating on the inside.  What are your guys thoughts.

Plumbing / Adding a 20 plate x-changer to my system and have a question?
« on: September 23, 2011, 08:42:55 PM »
My system right now just goes from my boiler to a heat x-changer in my plenum and then back to the stove.  How do I tie in the plate x-changer?  Do I run my hot from the stove straight to the plate and then to my furnace x-changer then back to the stove.  Seems as if I went to the furnace first my water temp would vary if your taking a shower and the furnace fan kicked on.  My x-changer in the plenum is on the topside (cold air return) of the furnace so the plate x-changer will be up high so I'm not sure how to mount it.  Any ideas on that??

Shaver Furnace / Leaker #2
« on: August 16, 2011, 07:36:15 PM »
If anyone remembers all the troubles I've had, they have continued.  I started with the 165 and it wasn't piped up right and fixed that and then after that the bottom of the tank got a hole in it.  They said it looked like it was hit with the welder right in the middle of the bottom when it was being built.  Didn't look like it to me (cheap and thin steel??).  So they made up for it and switched it out for the 250.  I just used it this last season and got along pretty good with it until I went out to feed the dog today and noticed water all around the stove.  Its been sitting since late April and its got the proper chemicals in it for anti-corrosion.  What the hell do I do now.  This is just ridiculous.  I know lots of others with other brands that dont even mess with chemicals in there water and dont have problems like this.  I will demand another one.

Plumbing / How should the routing of the pex go with multiple heat draws
« on: November 03, 2010, 10:53:49 AM »
My hot water from my owb comes up thru the floor to the top of my furnace(it's a downdraft). I need to hook up a flatplate heat exchanger for my dhw. Do I first go to the flatplate and then back to the furnace?  And what if I added a heat exchanger to my garage off the same incoming line?  It seems like somekind of manifold could be used but I didn't see any for 1". And what about the cold return lines?  Can 2 lines come together going back to the stove?

submersible ones I think you have to make some kind of well????  I just dont know.......

Shaver Furnace / My new Shaver 250 for 2009
« on: October 13, 2009, 08:10:33 AM »
After all the problems with the 165 I had the past 2 seasons they traded me a new 250.  I still made a few modifications that I thought it needed to the new one.  Like the fan, I bought the relay selenoid? (for a Hardy stove)to open the fan door when it needed to run.  It stopped the overheating and boiling.  Second, I still ran my cold water return lines up through the top plate and to the front of the stove.  Dont understand why Shaver didn't figure this out.  The last thing I did was built my woodshed around the stove so no wind would affect it.  That front door gets really HOT with no wind on it to cool it down.  Hope I have better luck with this one.
