Hawken Energy, support only / Re: Removing rain cap for cleaning

What if you burned some cardboard and got it really hot, then the creosote would be soft? Unless it's screwed on..

if it is already discolored (or you don't mind if it is) perhaps a propane torch? I am thinking it is glued  in with tar from the wood

Polar Furnace / Re: Polar post #'s

Ok but they have been doing the name for at least 4-5 years that I'm aware of, ever since Arthur and Dave put the screws to all involved.

Maybe Slim can clear this up. I have it from several reliable sources that he is closely affiliated with Polar. Likely an ownership role.

That I would not doubt as Art's old partner Dave has been connected with Polar since day one. The conventional Polar's are Wood Doctor's with a different wrapper.

Just what is "short money"?   I only ask because NEW GX and HE stoves are showing up on Craigslist now a month after the Hawken auction.

Unless the guy is just about giving it away I would pass on it and look at the NEW HE's on CL.

I'm thinking the GX10 is also a small stove.

If it works and the cylinder is good, its defiantly worth it. Especially if you know how to fabricate and wrench on things.

I noticed the same about the specs.......I was going to say, if you bought it from Menards, you might have went backward as far as quality. Speedco makes a solid splitter for the price. By the weight of it, sounds like a good one.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Softened Water

What's everyone think about using softened water in an OWB?  My dealer told me it was best if you used it but I didn't have one when we hooked it up.  I have since installed one and have been using it to top it off when needed.  I just got an email from Hawken support and they stated not to use softened water.

Pffff........Hawken Support.........

Does anybody know if the hawken gassers were/are any good? Anybody here own one? They look very similar to empyre style and I guess those had issues?

They are not too popular on the Hawken thread.

Did anyone buy anything from this auction? Looks as if some paid over retail on things and some got a smoking deal as with most auctions. Looks like the new stoves sold for a decent price (no huge deals) as long as one wasn't looking to flip them.

I sold my tired Speedco 35 Ton and bought a Northern Tool 37 Ton horz/vert with the Honda motor. Motor is great, chassis is average. Not for high volume firewood processing.

If you plan on spending $2500 on the splitter you WANT.......make it $5000 and you will have the splitter you NEED.

Just my $.02
