460 rancher bar length ?
« on: January 10, 2016, 11:05:13 AM »

I have a brand new Husqvarna 460 rancher that came with 20 inch bar. Wandering if anyone out there uses both or all three bar lengths that are recommended by Husqvarna.16, 20, or 24" bars. How does saw perform with each size. I can see times when all three would be good.

I’ve always liked a 20” bar myself, good all around size for most everything.

Have a 023 with a 16” bar.

My 362 has a 25” bar and it just seems odd, soon as its wore out I’m gonna put a twenty on it, when the 20” ain’t enough I have a 460 with a 30” bar.

Great tip. I think I'll stick with the 20". The 60cc should handle that bar and chain real well. The chain on this saw is 7/32. My old Stihl that I sold before I bought this one had the .325 I believe, and my sharpener wheel will need replacing. So far am happy with the change.

Ayuh,.....     I too, run 20" bars on my Stihls,....

It's 'bout all the 290 wants to spin,....
The 044 handles the 20" just fine, as does my newer 460 magnum I bought this last Fall,....
The 460 came with a 25" bar, 'n chain, which I'll keep hangin' on the wall for bigger blockin' chores,....

I love the 20" bar, as I use it to gauge the length of the rounds I'm cuttin',....
My splitter will take 24", so the 20" rounds are perfect,....

Thanks Bondo for the great response. I'm an old man looking for an easier way to keep a pike of wood. I'm pretty excited to use my husky 460 for the first time. May try to find me a good but cheap limber either Stihl or husky. Any suggestions

I have a 460 rancher and do run the 20'' bar and find it great for all around work for me . I would think with other bars around you would be always having to keep other good smaller chain around. I keep several new 20'' chain and it works out great.  Jeff

I had a couple of sticks of hickory that were too long for my stove, so I got out my new 460 husky and it started on the first crank ever had that to happen on cold saw. These two logs were hard and around 12"
Thick. My saw eat through them very fast. I was very impressed. I didn't have to push, I just let the weight of the saw push it through. The 60 cc will do just fine with that 20" bar

I have a Stihl MS 180C  with ia 16" bar that I use for limbing. It's extremely light, has easy start and is surprisingly powerful for such a small saw.  I usually carry it on the ATV when riding in case I come across windfalls.

When I bought my stihl ms-361 it had a 20" bar.  Most everything I cut is between 10 and 14 inches so I put a 16" bar on it.  Seems like with the 20" bar I always end up with the tip in the dirt cause everything I cut is on the ground.  The 16 is much better,  runs a lot faster rpm and the chains are cheaper and easier to sharpen.  I still keep my 20 for the bigger stuff but I use the 16 95% of the time.

I had 5  18" Stihl chains left when I sold my stihl 270. Will they work on my husky 460. I would have to buy me a 18 " bar. That would be good in certain situations. Not sure if those chains will work on the 460.

seems like most chainsaws are sold with a longish bar for the saw.

I usually go with a bigger motor and shorter bar for best performance.

I think they are sold this way because as you may have noticed, people say they have a 20" chainsaw, not that they have a 60cc saw.  Drives me nuts.

My 372 husky has had an 18 inch bar all the way up to a 32 inch bar on it at different times. Once I even put a 18 inch bar on my 395xp (94cc) just for giggles  >:D
