I bought a shovel, rake and hoe at a garage sale with bad handles. I removed the wood handles and used steel tubing instead. Just welded the steel tubing to the steel shovel and other pcs. Made the handles nice and long and burn free. I work in a tubing shop, but 1 inch conduit might do the trick as well.

I put 3/4" conduit on a rock rake the same way.  It works well.  1" probably would have worked better.  For the shovel, you might want to use something a bit more sturdy than conduit, however.

A piece of black pipe in 1/2” would probably be stout enough for the shovel, 3/4” definitely would be

1/2" black iron would be stout enough, but quite skinny to be holding onto.  3/4" should be about right though.

A few years ago I got a round point shovel with about 1" dia conduit handle at a auction for 50 cents, not what I'd use for digging dirt but for ashes and an occasional pile of used dog food it's fine.

Ayuh,....    I've got an ole garden hoe head welded to the end of a piece of 1" fence pipe/ rail for workin' the firebox,.....

A square point blacktop shovel, not good enough to shovel blacktop anymore for scoopin' out ashes, 'n arrangin' logs when loadin',....

Just use a plain jane garden rake for cleanin' up bark, 'n crap,.... Handle rots off, toss it, 'n buy another,...

Bought a 10 tine $h!t fork a few years ago, which works great for shovelin' the bark, 'n crap into the boiler,....

The short D handle rotted off in a couple years, so I grafted on a full length blacktop shovel handle onto it,...
Ain't gotta bend over so much with it now,....
