I always replace the rope also because there is hard spots normally and depending how you reinstall you might not get a good seal .
I normally clean ashes out and put rain cap on .. I have the rain cap the fits on extension so I still get air in the fire box from outside .
but cover keeps water from getting in . I found if I put a plastic bucket on smoke stack I get even more sweating going on inside .
because my heatmor is in the shade under trees all summer . this is just my findings . I did the same with my 200 css and never had a issue as far as chimney corrosion.. that lasted 19 years ..

Quality comes with a price tag. At least you know what you're getting.

I will admit the Heatmors are better then Cadillacs.
Mileage depending.

Heatmors have there place the old style there as versatile as the operator wants them to be. This is why I got hooked in to them.
I have no clue why my 2015 400 didn't come with draft covers.
I put marks where to set draft chokes for what ever moiture wood I'm burning . It saves alot of wood . And range is 40% to 10% it's ruffly 1/8 increments. If I would burn wet wood in a pinch. Remove rain cap and draft chokes. Maybe everyone knows this . But it's the reason Guys with heatmors like them . You can burn what ever wood you have ... Or dry wood and save the back. 👍😀

Getting more tech in to the dry wood burning . Trick is backing off the drafts . Moiture meter took the mystery out of it . Now I want a remote temp sensor on chimney . And yes a Heatmor 400 can burn dry slabs . Takes chimney Cap and pans blocking off draft fans. Heatmor 400 1/3 full of dry oak slabs gets you 8 hours at -21f
Heating 6600sqft .. slabs burn super hot. 42,000 lbs of slabs for season central MN. That was my 2018 experiment.

Heatmor 400 A.K.A Huge gasifier.
Picture of stove the draft fans are off. Can't have them on with door open . Cherry red rain cap is if you have pans on draft fans open to far.

We had a bit of debate how dry these slabs were if they were below 30% as most boiler wood you want it around there. We'll out of the 20 bundles they seemed pretty dry . But surprised me just how dry they were. Meter had to brake up the debate. I still get a bit of black build up in the fire box between cycles . But I'm thinking it's do to so dry of slabs there there putting out serious rich smoke in off cycle. It's only around bottom of door and like shiny dry hard super thin coat in the firebox . Might be to do with long off cycles.

I got meter from Amazon . It works great so far. Has anyone else tried this model ? Debarked oak slabs run about 19%. Same reading as habor freight cheapy lol..

Just to add . I tested some wet oak blocks in stove leaving it set to slabs drafting they don't burn they smolder. But they work good to keep a coal to start the slabs .. the drafting does work perfect . Set draft to moiture in wood . Just like old indoor stoves.. but saves you alot of wood that's for sure..
