General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Need more pump?
« on: October 07, 2018, 02:46:33 PM »
Finaly got it. There is a reduction valve between the valve to let in domestic water to fill the system and the main system loop. It wasn't letting in much water and I didn't let it run long enough. Finally get enough water in to fill the loop.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Need more pump?
« on: October 07, 2018, 10:05:51 AM »
My current setup in the house is 3 zones, one for each level of a 1800sq/ft split level house. Each zone is approximately the same size and length of pipe. Each zone is on it's own valve and the entire system is powered with a Grundfos 15-42f pump.

I just finished a kitchen remodel and swapped out one of the baseboards for heated floors using ultra-fins. I removed around 20ft of 3/4in copper pipe and added approximately 150ft of 1/2in pex. Now the 15-42f is struggling to move the water/heat through that loop!! even with the other 2 zones off, I'm not getting any heat through that loop and it sounds like the pump is struggling to pump (if I open another loop you can hear the pump stop struggling).

So my question is, should I find a way/place to add an additional pump on that loop to help the 15-42 move the water or should I upgrade the 15-42 for a bigger pump?

I'm watching supply and return at the boiler, supply and return into the house and currently General outside temp. I plan to monitor my shop temp when I move the boiler and begin heating the shop as well. I also plan on controlling the shop heat with a relay through the x320.

The x410 will do all of the above, and they also now have an add-on module for the x410 that will let you run a sensor to monitor flue temps!

The x320 doesn't let me graph, although there are ways to send your data to a database and setup web based graphs if you know how to stay sort of programing. Marty on here has done it. I messed with it little big but haven't fully set it up yet. The x410 has built in graphing I belive. I would for sure get the x410 over the x320!!

Several on here running the x300 and x320. I ordered my x320 on eBay like a hour before they announced the x410!  :bash:

I've been happy with the x320 so far, but the x410 looks even better!!

It's at the end of the loop. The baseboards that are there do ok, just doesn't get much above 60-64 when the rest of the rooms are at 72. I think it's a combination of being the end of the loop and being all windows.

Plumbing / Add a loop (zone) to existing system

Ok, my house is currently on 3 zones, one for each level of our split level house. The main level of the house is our kitchen, dinning room, main living and also a sun porch on the back of the house which is now our sons playroom. The thermostat is in the living room at the front of the house. The entire house system has a single pump and then there are 3 zone valves that are each connected to a thermostat on each level.

We have baseboard heat with an oil boiler that runs as a backup if the OWB runs out of wood. Everything works really well, except the sun room tends to be really cold. It's all Windows and with the thermostat on the opposite side of the room, it's hard to keep it warm without over heating the rest of the house.

I would like to pull that room off the main floor loop and put it on its own thermostat. That way we can warm it up when he is back there and not over heat the rest of the house. What is the best way to add a loop without completely reworking the whole system? Should I add it to the main system and add a new zone valve? Should I add a new small pump just for that zone? I've done all the install work on my system so I'm not worried about doing the work, just want to know the best way to do it.

Look into the x300 or x320 from Control by Web. Monitor your temps from anywhere with a web based system. Can even add relays or other input/outputs to monitor stuff. I just got my x320 setup to monitor my temps (6 different temps at a time) and am working on getting it to monitor and let me know when the blower is one and later I will use it to monitor and control the heat in my pole barn as well.

I finally placed my order for an x320!! Excited to get it setup and running for this winter. Of course they announced the new x410 like 2 hours after I placed my order with a reseller through eBay, but I can always upgrade if I out grow the x320. I'll update as I get it installed and running.

Looks like they also have an adaptor to use Type-K Thermocouples with the new x410 as well!! Figures, after over a year of planning they release the cool new stuff the day after I place my order for the x320.
What about running a mySQL database and logging all your thermocouples there and incorporating queries into your web page?

Running a MAX6675 and an Arduino to log to the database is fairly easy.  You can run quite a few MAX6675 thermocouple ADCs on a Uno or more of a Mega.

Got it rigged up so you can do as many thermocouples into your Arduino as you want.

Neal

I hope to run the data into sql using Marty's setup above. Don't have much sql experience other then setting up WordPress sites so I'll see how well it goes. I just got my sensors and got the first 2 hooked up and working tonight. Looks like cold weather this week, so I want to get it all setup so so can test everything this week! The x320 was VERY easy to install and get it online.

Wow!! Tons of nice stuff there, including a bunch of stoves. Seems like a good way to maybe get a good deal for someone looking for a stove. Wish they had some logstor or better insulated pex!!

Ok, really need to get something for monitoring. Have had issues the last week with the fire going out (twice at night and once at work) because of some bad wood and I really need a way to have the system warn me before i walk out and the boiler is at 120*

Looking at the x320 more then the x300 now. I think having 6 temp sensors and the inputs and outputs avaliable will be better then having the 8 temp sensors and relays only. Thay will allow me to monitor if the boiler fan is on as well as then stuff on with the output (and an external relay).

Marty, are you still running your system? Have you made any changes? Any chance you would be interested in sharing or selling the code/files for sending the txt data to the sql database?

Anyone else running this setup or found anything else as an alternative?

What are the dimensions of the garage heat exchanger? How big of a Garage did it heat? Interested in selling that seperate from the stove?

What are the specs of your heater? Brand? BTUs? I need to add something similar and our winters here in Ohio are similar to what you guys get up north.
