General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Warmer heat? or all in my head?
« on: October 04, 2009, 07:25:02 AM »
Fired up the boiler yesterday and my wife commented how that, even with the thermostat set the same temp as the propane furnace was set at, it feels warmer in the house.

We have forced air furnace and I told the wife it's all in her head, 68 degrees is 68 degrees.  I have to admitt this morning however it does feel warmer in the house, even though the thermostat reads the same 68 degrees.

I started thinking about it more, is it possible it feels warmer because the hot water heat exchanger has hot water running through it continuosly and some warm air is continously radiating from the ductwork even with the furnace blower off? more even heat possibly?or does free heat just feel warmer?

It can be a real pain to work with, not that it's much help to you at this time a year, but I found laying it out in the sun on a warm day helped.

Thanks for the reply Willie, I went ahead and bought a different heat exchanger and installed it already, I put antifreeze in my system this year, so I didn't need that worry in the back of my head

Plumbing / Aluminum heat exchanger possible problems
« on: July 20, 2009, 06:41:36 PM »
Last year when I installed my boiler, to save some money,I made my own heat exchanger for my shop  out an automobile aluminum radiator. I noticed when ordering my new chemicals this year, on the company I use for chemicals, they do not rec aluminum in your system, does anyone have a a few years on an aluminum heat exchanger? Maybe dissimilar metals will cause corrosion?Maybe I shouild just change it out :bash:

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Antifreeze
« on: June 12, 2009, 10:28:37 AM »
I was thinking of using antifreeze in my stove next winter, just for peace of mind and if we go away for the weekend, power outages etc.

Does anybody know of a source that sells what I need at a good price? From what I have found it looks about the best I can get it for, is around $700 for 55 gal. ouch!

I didn't give them a chance.  They sent a driver that was his first time and didn't know anything about them.
Just curious, did your new stove come with insulation on the bottom? Also did it come with a digital auqaustat or the same old cheapo stat?

Well finally got the deal settled.  I did give in and gave them $200 but I got a new stove and even got the next size bigger(250). They even came and exchanged the stoves.  I also lost out on $350 for the spray foam.  This time I'm going to put insulation board on the bottom and add insulation batting around the sides and top.  I still think the foam was better but expensive.  This year I think I'm going to build a wind block so my stove isn't taking on the wind constantly.
Really glad it worked out for ya, I was thinking they were going to give you grief on the spray foam
  (blame it on you)

I think I am going to try and sell mine this spring, get a CB or woodmaster.
Then I worry about some other poor fella having trouble, I wonder if CB or woodmaster dealer would take it in on trade? doubt it :bash:
I really hope it works out for you, new stove, or better yet a refund.

I will also be very interested in you and your buddys wood useage comparison, let us know.
I was more talking about non high efficiency units, I think the new high efficiency stoves may be a whole different ball game, If you don't mind me askin, how much did you pay for your stove?
I think alot of us are real interested in the new high efficient stoves, but a little apprehensive, and are kinda taking a wait and see attitude.
I know I for one used alot of wood this year, around 12 cord so far :-\

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Firebox size
« on: April 07, 2009, 05:38:12 PM »
I've noticed alot of owb makers rate their BTU output based on water capacity of the stove, it doesn' t make much sense to me, in my thinking wouldn't the size of the firebox determine BTU?  bigger firebox, bigger fire? also the bigger the firebox the more heated surface area in contact with the water.
I bought a shaver and the firebox is very small compared to a woodmaster, at the time I was thinking, smaller firebox with the same BTU rating as the woodmaster, should burn less wood, I definitly think my reasoning was flawed. Now I'm thinking the bigger the firebox the better, more surface area for the fire to warm.
I don't know, anybody have any thoughts? ???

I think the water jacket on the shaver is only 1/8". I was bummed out when I got my stove and realized this. They brag on their website about the "over 3/8 thick firebox"
The tube part of the firebox is the only part 3/8" thick, the plates welded on the end are 1/4" and the water jacket only 1/8".
Now I am wooried about my stove, thats what I get for buying something without actually inspecting it in person, but then again, untill you own something for a while it's hard to know what to even look for.
Grandgracing, do you think your spray foam insulating trapped moisture under the stove? contributing to the rusting?
I was going to take mine apart this spring and insulate the bottom,,, maybe I should leave it alone ???

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Should I buy a Woodmaster???
« on: March 31, 2009, 10:29:44 AM »
This may sound odd to some people, but one of the reasons I bought an owb is for the work, I was born and raised on a dairy farm and was taught how to work and a work ethic from a young age. I never really appreciated this untill I was older and realized most kids these days have no work ethic and have no idea how to work.

I don't live on a farm now, and it has always been a concern to me, how I would find enough things for my kids to do, to teach them what I learned as a kid, and am thankful for. I think most parents today are majorly dropping the ball in this area.

I have 4 kids, and we all go out to the woods, cut ,split, stack, as a family, from my 4 year old daughter to my 11 year old son,and it is actually kind of a fun time for us as a family. When they get a little older they will also be loading the stove/ maintaining and such.

Ok I'll get off my soapbox now

Yoda,

Same here..... I've been looking (researching) for months and will finally buy in May/June.  Just trying to make an informed purchase.

'If you don't mind me asking, what did you end up with and why don't you like it?

Thanks.
I bought a Shaver 165. Main dislikes are #1 poorly insulated, #2 firebox is too small, in this weather I have to load it 3 times a day, below zero 4 times.
I am planning on taking it apart this summer and insulating it better so hopefully that helps.
After buying mine I looked at a woodmaster, the firebox on the woodmaster is huge in comparison, some of my problem may be my fault as I think I should have bought at least the next size bigger than what I bought, and they recommended

I have never seen one in person, looks like a decent unit, course I spent hours upon hours researching on the internet and ended up making (in hind sight) a poor choice I think :bash: so I think if I had to do it over again I would probably buy one of the big names like woodmaster or C.B. But don't listen to me :bash: :bash: :bash:
