SO i hooked up the Johns A419 controller that came yesterday. I took my time being so careful making sure all the connections were right and secure. I go turn on the power, fans come on, aquastat instantly was reading 147 and started to climb...i hit the "menu" button and BOOOOOOOOOM. The thing blew up. I am getting a replacement sent back in the mail....if any of the PROS would be so kind as to take a look at the pictures i attached of the Wiring diagram for the boiler and the controller.

Are you sure of which Aqua stat you got, you would want the ABC model for your 110 voltage

OK, that's the right one, is it wired according to the schematic, what the heck would make it fry as soon as you touched the menu?

fans wires were hooked up as my load to NO, jumper from C to 120, Black (hot) hooked up to 120 and white hooked up to COM

i even had my buddy who is an electrician wire my Ranco and run me through it....so when i got the Johnson i left the Ranco pre wired and i went wire for wire hooking it up.....i think i hooked the boiler wiring up correctly

im thinking i hooked something up on the boiler side wrong and it fed power back into the controller or something

Your white wire from power in was to the AC common on the left am I right?

I would say you have a faulty control out of the box.

now let me ask....how the two wires on the boiler side that are hooked up to the mechanical  aquastat be wired with the Johnson in place?

Look at each Aqua Stat as a switch, the power comes into the first ( probably the mechanical ) , when it makes, the power then goes to the next Aqua Stat on the c terminal on the right and continues in series from there to the blower and solenoid.

so my question is...when installing the A419....the two wires that are normally on the mechanical that as the "switch point" should be twisted together and capped. and now the A419 will act that the "switch" correct?

You may be better off running a new hot wire instead of using the jumper. It is a lot easier to keep everything sorted out and if the switch is before the controller, it will keep the controller always on.

If you wire it that way, you would just run a hot and neutral to the power terminal and then connect the two wires that were on the mechanical aquastat to the NO and C connections on the other terminal strip.

You can use a jumper if you know the hot wire and not the load wire is jumpered to the 120v terminal.

Anyway, if you put all the wires in the same terminals as the Ranco (by terminal label) then it should have been wired ok. Did you take a picture of the connections? If you could post that and tell us what each wire is, we can tell you for sure if anything was wrong or if it was just a bad controller.
The only thing I can think of that would have caused what happened is if you had a neutral wire and a hot wire both connected to the relay terminal strip and once you changed the setting it either energized or de-energized the relay and shorted out.

RSI...thank you....i did not take pictures when i had it hooked up... i sent both controllers back for refund. I should be getting a new one in the mail within the next week. I can however take a pic of my junction box at the boiler so you can see the wire diagram. Perhaps i will even take a video....when i get the new controller in the mail i dont want this to happen again...LOL
