General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Ohio OWB owners
« on: March 27, 2010, 05:02:43 AM »
I just received an e-mail communication from Ohio EPA regarding the wood furnaces. I hope I can attach a copy because it has a couple important e-mail addresses.  This makes a whole lot more sense than their previous blanket ruling they were proposing.  I intend to comment after reading the new rules.  They plan to regulate only those that are burning the nuisance and hazaroudous materials.  Not sure how this will shut down my neighbor.  He recycles old applicances and burns the insulation off the wires in a burn barrel and does it ever stink.  Otherwise they plan to let it up to the local communities for regulation.

In case I don't get the attachment in here are the e-mail links.

Hope this helps.  Lets be gentlemen and ladies with any comments.  It worked the last time

Ohio EPA is reviewing some sort of restrictions as well.  One of the guidelines being considered was a grace period to get your wood furnace in compliance with emissions standards.  If not you would be required to shut it down or install one that was in compliance.

This is still being drafted and has been for  the past 1-2 years.  1st comment period has passed

I hope you PA doesn't impose them either.

thanks for the update.  I knew they were in the process of revising it.  Our local installer was thinking of getting a few a busload or two of  owners to attend a public hearing if necessary.  Fortunately that has not had  to happen yet.

I did make comment on the first draft which was encoraged by my dealer.  I think there might have been a very large contingent of the Amish community who wrote in.  I know quite a few in the Wayne & Holmes County area have outdoor wood furnaces. I know of 3 of us in my church who have the Woodmaster.  They may have received correspondence from more upset users than they anticipated.

The thing that irks me no end is one of my  neighbors recycles old appliances and burns the insulation off the wires.  Talk about stink. That smells much worse than my wood furnace ever does and they say nothing about that.  I've also seen inside furnace chimneys smoking much worse than my outdoor one.

WoodMaster / unhooked spring
« on: March 06, 2010, 05:37:45 PM »
I noticed this morning that the fan had a kind of funny sound but wasn't sure what it was.  Later this afternoon I noticed the temperature was way down and the funny noise was still there.

Got the tool kit out and pulled the cover and the spring had unhooked from the flapper for some reason.  Never had that happen before.  Hooked everything up and left the cover off until temps were up on the aquastat to see if everything worked.

Any one else had that happen?

General Discussion / Re: woodstoves...not even close

Not sorry I did it either when I built my new house.  I still heat my hot water with propane and use propane as a backup but nice even heat all the time and no mess in the house.  I love it.  I too need the exercise of cutting, carrying & splitting the firewood   getting ready for the winter.  Carrying wood to the furnace each evening gets me some of the exercise I am supposed to have.  I keep a 2-4 day pile by the furnace and the main pile a bit away from the furnace.

The only thing I wish I could have done differently was to be able to afford putting the under floor tubes in the basement and garge floors.  However, I just couldn't swing the extra 3-4 k when I built the house and didn't have the time to put it in myself.
So I live without it.  I do have the ceiling mount in the garage which makes it a bit more comfy to work during the winter and melts off the car overnight.

WoodMaster / thermostat wiring
« on: March 06, 2010, 06:29:10 AM »
I have a Woodmaster 4400 now in use for 2 years.  Love the savings in propane.  My backup furnace is a propane that I will probably switch over too soon rather than keeping a low fire going over the next  month.

My situation is that I use the furnace fan to circulate my warm air.  I have dual thermostats but something is not quite right in the wiring and I have a problem getting the service tech out.  I have an AC/Heat Pump as well hooked into the main thermostat.

I thought that when the wood furnace goes down the main furnace was supposed to switch on to back me up in case I'm not there.
However that doesn't happen and I have to switch off the wood furnace thermostat and turn the main thermostat furnace on.

Anyone have any ideas on what to look for in the wiring?  I have to wonder whether it has something to do with the Heat pump set up.
